Today, the Biden-Harris Administration released a new U.S. Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), establishing a target to reduce economy-wide emissions by at least 61% below 2005 levels by 2035. This commitment aims to reduce emissions, advance clean energy innovation, and develop healthier, more resilient communities in the U.S. Saharnaz Mirzazad, AICP Mirzazad, Executive Director of ICLEI USA, shares: “We welcome the U.S. government's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by a minimum of 61% below 2005 levels by 2035. Over three decades, ICLEI USA has partnered with federal agencies to enable our work with 1,200+ cities, towns, counties, and Tribal nations in all 50 states to develop local climate plans. We know local efforts made this updated Paris Agreement plan possible — and we will work with our network to ensure local governments remain critical partners for meeting the goal.” As a part of this effort, ICLEI USA remains dedicated to supporting local governments to take action, ensuring that cities, towns, Tribal nations, and regions are central to achieving these climate goals. From Daring Cities to Town Hall COPs, how ICLEI is taking on local-to-global climate action 🌆 🌎 https://lnkd.in/e4r5VUQ5 Throughout 2024, Daring Cities has spotlighted the Town Hall COPs initiative as an innovative mechanism linking local climate emergency action to national and global efforts, empowering communities and subnational governments worldwide to make meaningful contributions to climate commitments on local, national, and global levels ahead of #COP30 in 2025. During #COP29’s 20 November session, “Town Hall COPs in the new era of local-global climate action and advocacy," we explored how #TownHallCOPs fit into the current global climate arena and how local and subnational governments can drive this initiative forward. At the session, #ICLEI and EARTHDAY.ORG announced a new partnership to kickstart the Earth Day Global Conversation. It aims to engage mayors, city governments, and their communities worldwide in public dialogues about the benefits of #RenewableEnergy. Read more about the partnership 🤝 https://lnkd.in/emW2jd8N Starting in April 2025 and continuing through the year, these ‘Conversations’ will unite communities in a collective push for renewable energy, aiming to strengthen the Town Hall COPs initiative as a tool for local and regional governments to connect their communities for #ClimateEmergency action at all levels. 🚀
