🔬 During EAIS24, we had the opportunity of taking a closer look into #biotech investment trends. Being a dedicated panel powered by Bionanopolys, the session went on to point out critical turning points for biotech startups with regard to the very unique funding landscape of the industry and solutions for bridging financial gaps. Speakers like Märt-Erik Martens from Gelatex, Stef Denayer from Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, and Nicolas Rouhana from IM Fndng, moderated by Viktorija Trimbel from Coinvest Capital, focused on the "valley of death" in thebiotech sector, sharing insights into this difficult stage where biotech endeavors reach a difficult point where financing struggles between the pilot stage and full-scale production 🌍.
The consensus recommendation was on how to maximize the use of the pilot facilities available in Europe, with Stef Denayer emphasizing the need for using well-equipped shared facilities to reduce duplicate investments and minimize startup risks.
The next discussion focused on how new financing models including blended finance, where grants consisting of combined venture capital and angel investments, are used to support long-term and high-impact projects in health and bio-based tech. The latter is well-suited to the extended growth timelines of biotech and provides a solid investment base for impact-driven ventures.
Lastly, an additional focus on the disparity within Europe: while Western Europe has developed biotech infrastructure, Eastern Europe, despite possessing an abundance of biomass resources, remains under-resourced. The message could not be clearer as more cross-border collaboration is needed to make sure that the continent works towards balance.
Europe's biotech sector needs harmonized investment, infrastructure, and cross-regional support to create a sustainable growth cluster 🌱. To read the full article on our website, click the following link: https://lnkd.in/eezBdmaS
