Unlike traditional tests, which depend on bacterial growth and require a 24-hour wait, Resistell’s platform uses cell vibration patterns, providing results in just 2 hours. Investing in the semiconductor and photonics space can be a challenge for venture capital funds. These industries are highly technical, capital-intensive, and have long development cycles. At INPHO’s recent workshop, coordinated by Regis Hamelin from BLUMORPHO, we dove into this topic. The discussion highlighted the significant hurdles faced by startups, as noted by Isabel Obieta Vilallonga from the #EICAccelerator. Securing funding and attracting top talent are key challenges, especially in regions like Malaysia and Sarawak where competition for skilled engineers and scientists is intense, as highlighted by SMD Semiconductor. One of the biggest challenges in these industries is navigating the complex landscape of M&A. As Bert G. from imec.xpand added, the limited pool of potential buyers often restricts exit options for startups. However, Europe, with its strong research institutions and innovative companies, has the potential to become a global leader in semiconductors and photonics. As Sean Redmond from Silicon Catalyst.UK pointed out, fostering collaboration within this industry is crucial to creating a thriving ecosystem that drives growth.
