The festive season is shaping up to be a record-breaking one for British pubs, with nearly 300 million pints anticipated to be poured throughout December, according to the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA). This surge in seasonal trade is forecast to pump £3.3 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) into the UK economy, highlighting the vital role pubs and brewers play in supporting both communities and national coffers.

🍺 Nearly 300 Million Pints Sold This December—Cheers to the UK’s Pub Culture! 🎄 According to the British Beer and Pub Association, December is a monumental month for pubs across the UK, with an estimated 300 million pints expected to be sold. This incredible activity contributes a staggering £3.3 billion in gross value added (GVA) to the economy, with £1.7 billion making its way to the treasury. Did you know that 9.5% of annual beer sales happen this month alone? That’s around £1.4 billion in turnover, based on an average pint price of £4.80! But here’s the sobering truth: despite pouring billions into the economy, pubs face razor-thin margins—earning just 12p per pint after covering the rising costs of doing business. As Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, puts it: "Month in, month out, but most of all at Christmas, beer and pubs pour billions into the UK economy and treasury. These figures highlight just how much our sector boosts the economy, but also what little money is left over." Pubs are more than businesses—they’re at the heart of our communities. Annual profits at JD Wetherspoon are expected to beat the expectations of City analysts and shareholders, with sales at its pubs holding up well despite the cost of living crunch. The pubs chain said pints of Guinness and real ales are selling particularly well, while its new menu, which includes a ramen noodle bowl and a shawarma chicken wrap, has made a “promising start”. Like-for-like sales, which excludes the impact of new or closed pubs, rose 5.2 per cent between the end of January and the end of April compared with the same three months in 2023 despite an extra bank holiday in this period. https://lnkd.in/enWeKs6Y

Heatwave Could Pull In More Than £30 Million for UK Pubs, According to BBPA Pubs could be set for a massive multi-million pound boost as the sunny weather rolls in With Britain heading into a predicted to a heatwave, the sector could enjoy an uplift of 7 million pints and a £30 million windfall. The projected boost was based on comparing sales from a week in September 2023, which experienced similarly sunny weather. Over this period pubs sold 7.1m more pints than they did in an average week for the rest of that month. At today’s prices that would generate additional turnover of £34.2m. As pubs across the UK work their way towards the bank holiday, August may be the month the sector has been waiting for. Andrew Tighe, Director of Strategy and Policy of the British Beer and Pub Association said: “Nothing says summer more than a pint in your local beer garden and many Brits will be raising a glass to some much-needed warm weather. “After months of wet weather, this projected windfall could bring a ray of sunshine for pubs everywhere and help raise profits for a sector that plays a unique and important role in our culture and communities up and down the UK. “Pubs are an essential part of the British bank holiday, and the BBPA urges everyone to make the most of the sunny weather by visiting their local pub.” Read More:

Has "Splitting the G" created the Great Guinness Shortage of 2024? I’ll be honest, I’m not a Guinness drinker myself (despite my Irish roots). But even I can’t ignore the frenzy around splitting the G. If you’ve missed it, this viral trend has taken over social media, with drinkers trying to sip a pint of Guinness so precisely that the foam line lands halfway down the “G” in the logo on the glass. It’s simple, oddly satisfying, and completely blown up on TikTok and Instagram. The result? Guinness sales are through the roof, pubs are scrambling to keep up, and a beloved Irish stout is suddenly the hottest drink in the UK (and beyond). Landlords are saying UK keg sales have jumped over 20% compared to last year, and some are receiving just a fraction of their usual supply as distributors ration stock to meet Christmas demand. It’s fascinating how a pint of stout has become the centrepiece of a viral movement. Young drinkers are flocking to pubs, sharing their splitting the G attempts online, and turning Guinness into more than just a drink, it’s now a social experience. So, while I might not be raising a pint myself, I can’t help but admire the sheer power of a well-timed trend to turn a 250-year-old drink into the ultimate must-have. 🍺📱

The Devonshire in Soho has just become the first pub in the UK to serve Guinness 0.0 on draught. This time last year, it was rolled out on tap for the first time in Ireland and made available in 1,000 Irish pubs due to popularity. 3 weeks ago, our Founder, Daniel Rowntree shared that Big Alcohol companies are in turmoil, with Diageo shares continuing to fall. With the success of Guinness 0.0 cans, and Diageo’s investment in the draught version, we think it could be the shining light the Big Alcohol industry has needed. Speaking of the draught roll out in the Republic of Ireland, Diageo Ireland Managing Director Barry O'Sullivan, said: “Guinness 0.0 has become Diageo’s biggest non-alcoholic brand… More and more Irish consumers are choosing to moderate their drinking but they don’t want to compromise on taste or quality. 300 Million Christmas Pint Sales With Sector Pouring £3.3 Billion Into The Economy Almost 300 million pints could be sold in pubs in December, with the beer and pub sector expected to pour a total of £3.3 billion in GVA into the UK economy, new BBPA figures show. December could see the industry as a whole put £1.7 billion in the Treasury’s coffers, as the sector gears up for its busiest month, the BBPA calculated. The sales of pints in pubs in December alone amounts to 9.5% of their annual beer sales, and would generate turnover of around £1.4 billion, with the average pint costing £4.80. This would generate £136 million in beer duty alone. Roaring trade should highlight the huge contributions the sector makes to the UK’s coffers but not mask the fact that most pubs will only make pennies in profits for every pint sold, the BBPA said. Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: “Month in, month out, but most of all at Christmas, beer and pubs pour billions into the UK economy and Treasury. “With the average pub making just 12p a pint thanks to the shocking cost of doing business, these figures highlight just how much our sector boosts the economy, but also what little money is left over. “We’re working with Government to make sure they cut the cost of doing business so we can help deliver their growth mission, continue to be a pillar of the economy and job market, and remain at the heart of communities.” The sector supports more than 1 million jobs and latest figures show it contributed £34.4 billion in GVA to the economy. The British Beer and Pub Association has warned the cumulative impact of the Budget means, at a conservative estimate, a £650million increase to the cost of doing business for the industry putting pubs, brewers, investment and jobs at continued risk. The leading trade association is urging the Government to swiftly deliver on permanent and meaningful business rate reforms to give the sector the best chance of continuing to serve their communities and regenerate high streets. The BBPA is also calling on Government to reconsider the timing of the new employment costs so businesses can better plan and carry on employing staff they need, rather than staff they can afford.
