Thanks to decades of diligent work by a number of companies and some fantastic individuals doing great work "inside the machine" so to speak, we are finally starting to see traction with the idea that rural communities deserve public support too. The #decentralizedwastewater industry can't rest yet. More equal sharing of wastewater treatment infrastructure can go down to the individual homes and business level as well. Why shouldn't farmer Johnson's tax dollars help with the replacement of his septic system instead of replacing Gotham's 100 MGD plant?
Recently, the community of Newbern, Alabama inaugurated the wastewater treatment system which will connect neighboring homes and businesses to collect, treat and re-use water and reduce upkeep costs. The Columbia World Projects team and partners were on hand to celebrate this milestone in the Transforming Wastewater Infrastructure in the United States project that aims to provide equitable access to one of the most essential services. Earlier this month, a sewer main pipe in Ossining broke, spewing ~1 million gallons of sewage daily into the Croton and Hudson rivers. This incident underscores the urgent need to invest in our aging infrastructure. But the pipe break was a drop in the bucket compared to ongoing sewage discharges triggered by rain: This year alone, 1 billion gallons of partially-treated sewage have been discharged from Westchester County into the Hudson and Long Island Sound. NYC dumps 21+ billion gallons annually into our waterways, equivalent to filling the Empire State Building 72 times 🤢 These overflows endanger public health, close beaches, disrupt recreation, and harm wildlife. Riverkeeper advocates for solutions like sewer upgrades and green infrastructure (such as green roofs) to help protect our waterways 🌊 #SewageOverflow #EnvironmentalHealth #InfrastructureInvestment #CSO

You may have read this article, but it's worth reading again. Housing is infrastructure - it is a necessary part of a thriving community, just like roads, water, sewer systems, and communication networks are. When people like Tina live in uncertainty about whether they’ll have a place to live, it takes away from their ability to be productive members of our community. https://lnkd.in/gm7eRJhb . . . #housingaffordability #affordablehousing #housingdevelopment #housingcrisis #housingsolutions #housingforbellingham #bellinghamwa #whatcomcounty

Cherokee Nation, City of Stilwell break ground on new $26M water treatment plant The new state-of-the-art facility will replace the city’s aging water treatment center, which was built in the 1960s and is reaching its daily capacity of 2.8 million gallons of water. The new plant will nearly double the city’s capacity, providing up to 5 million gallons of water per day, serving not only the city of Stilwell, State of Oklahoma but also rural water districts throughout Adair County. “Our local and state partners were quick to listen to the community’s needs and worked hand-in-hand with us to make the biggest difference possible,” Cherokee Nation Deputy Chief Bryan Warner said. “This collaboration demonstrates the power of coming together to address critical infrastructure needs and ensure a brighter future for our citizens. We accomplish more by working together, and Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. and I share in that effort each day.
