As a lover of festive language, I can’t help but notice these fun differences each year. Here’s what most people don’t realise: When I say “Christmas jumper” to Americans, they give me a blank stare. When they say “Christmas sweater,” Brits know exactly what they mean. But that’s just the start… British Christmas terms that make Americans pause: • Boxing Day (December 26th – an extra holiday for shopping, sports and family time) • Christmas pudding (rich, fruity, often flambéed—nothing like fruitcake) • Father Christmas (our jolly gift-giver, but not Santa Claus) • Mince pies (spoiler: they don’t actually have meat) And Americans have their own festive language: • Christmas sweater (aka our Christmas jumper) • Fruitcake (often the subject of jokes, but some people love it) • The day after Christmas (Boxing Day? What’s that?) • Santa Claus (same jolly man, different name) Both have traditions full of love and joy. And both ways of celebrating are equally magical. Whether it’s “pudding” or “fruitcake,” the food still brings us together. There’s no wrong way to celebrate—it’s all about connection.
