June is PRIDE month, and protecting LGBTQ+ youth from the risks involved with substance-use disorder (SUD) and addiction is paramount. According to SAHMSA, about one third of bisexual males, bisexual females, and gay males had an SUD in the past year. About one fourth of lesbian females had an SUD in the past year. These are just a few proven steps you can take to help prevent substance-use disorder in LGBTQ+ youth, whether you are an educator, service-provider, or just a friend. As the CEO of our amazing clinic, I’m bursting with #pride to share how we support and celebrate neurodiversity every single day. For far too long, there’s been a big misunderstanding about autistic individuals and their capacity for sexual and romantic relationships. The old assumption that autistic people are uninterested in such relationships is just plain wrong. Recent studies have shown something incredible: autistic individuals are more likely to experience a wide diversity of sexual orientations. This means being LGBTQ+ and autistic are two identities that beautifully coexist. Being autistic doesn’t change or invalidate any LGBTQ+ identity – if anything, it adds a unique layer of richness to who we are. Unfortunately, the unique experience of being young, autistic, and LGBTQ+ has often been overlooked. But not anymore!
