This week Moorhouse | B Corp Certified hosted senior leaders from across the HE sector to discuss financial sustainability. We had a Finance Director from an NHS trust share some insights on how they have addressed similar challenges. This prompted a rich discussion which surfaced some important themes including: - The importance of culture in improving financial sustainability and key enablers of this including having a shared vision, well-developed financial literacy and strong leadership capability. - Achieving the right balance between tactical and strategic actions, framed around an explicit purpose of improving financial sustainability. - Distinguishing between what’s in the university’s control vs what’s required from a policy level to deliver improved financial sustainability Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing more detailed insights around these themes in supporting universities to achieve increased financial sustainability.  If you’d like to find out more, please do get in touch.

Taught a workshop for the six-week group of leaders from various companies/organizations for the Greater Binghamton Chamber. Someone commented they will be sad when it ends. Today's topic was "Delegation and Development." Many leaders don't delegate tasks that they "should" to direct reports because they would rather DIY the task, but in doing so, they deny emerging leaders a chance at self-development. We talked about prioritizing long-term development over short-term goals. And what it means and looks like to REALLY prioritize people.

It was a pleasure to have Megan Reed addressing our GBS students on "Value Adding Leadership For the Future of Work" exploring some key questions around what needs to change in the leadership of organisations that encourage work from anywhere? How does one facilitate an organisational culture that can thrive using human-centred design principles? What are key leadership factors that facilitate autonomy, trust and manage psychological distance in a hybrid work environment? How does leadership of today's organisation enable collaboration, connection and co-design? Through lucid and engaging conversation with Megan we explored the emerging model of leadership relevant to the emerging design of workplaces to address the new workforce needs.

If you persist long enough in leadership, you will eventually tangle with executive presence… and typically the exhortation to go get more of it, whatever it is.  Definitions will be hard to come by but typically include some combination of confidence, communication, and presence, as well as a claim that “you’ll know it when you see it.”   The good news is there are many things one can do to improve executive presence, but if you’re looking to get started, here’s a suggestion that covers a lot of ground… Go First. ·       Your boss asks your group for their opinion of the new design?  Go First ·       A speaker asks for questions at the next all hands call?  Go First ·       Your team needs a couple volunteers to plan the next leadership meeting?  Go First Why does it help?  Going first is a microcosm for leadership:  being willing to step into the uncertain, summoning courage even if you lack confidence, caring enough to engage, and forming/sharing a perspective.  Counterintuitively, going first can be even more helpful for introverts.  It allows for a more planned response, rather than jumping into the fray of a conversation on full boil. "The reality of work has changed radically.... The rise of the knowledge economy means intellectual capital management is crucial." What a powerful statement and call to action! It's from Griffith University's profile for their post-graduate course, "The Purpose and Future of Work". They are leading the charge on the essential conversations about the evolving nature of work and the bold leadership needed to navigate it.  Thanks to the kind invitation from Sangita De, Ph.D, FHEA today I had the great privilege of delivering a guest lecture on the topic of "Value Adding Leadership for the Future of Work" for this class. We explored what it means to be a leader in an era where the future work isn't something "coming soon"; it’s unfolding right now and requires us to rethink traditional leadership paradigms and embrace new ways of creating value. I'd love to know - what's top of your mind for value adding leadership?

Many leaders in the Life Science arena have achieved a level of success in their careers because of their technical acumen and scientific capabilities. However, being in a leadership role today is more frequently about so much more that requires different muscles.
