When Your Beard Gets You Mixed Up! Diving into the brewery scene to help owners spruce up their brands and reel in more distributors, I've hit a snag I didn't see coming… mistaken identity! Yep, joining all these brewery groups, I started noticing some unexpectedly frosty vibes on my posts, especially when charity events popped up in the convo. Then it hit me today – it’s the beard and cap combo! Turns out, I kinda resemble another guy from the industry’s past who, let’s just say, wasn’t doing the noblest things with charity funds. This mix-up has been a real eye-opener on how crucial it is to nail your personal brand, especially in tight-knit circles like breweries. Looks like it might be time for a little makeover, or at least a tweak in how I present myself online, to steer clear of any bad juju from the past. I’ll keep you all posted on the changes and how it all pans out. Your business or charity is literally a needle in a haystack that needs help getting found You're competing for attention with 5.6 million private sector businesses and around 75,000 charities all of which are doing what you're doing - pumping out a continuous stream of digital content in the form of blogs, social media posts, emails, and ads in the hope of getting seen and heard by consumers and donors. Getting noticed in and among all that noise and distraction is an immense challenge, and one that just keeps getting harder. The answer? Dare to differ. When they go left, you go right. Invest in things that make you obviously different, because different gets seen. What does different look like? • showing up in unexpected places • extensive use of humour • shocking imagery and videos • completely reframing things Remember when the fashion brand French Connection rebranded? It caused a storm, but holy fcuk, it worked. Benetton, another fashion brand, is famed for its ads that caused a mix of outrage and curiosity. Then there's supermarket brand Aldi with its amusing social media jibes at rivals, Innocent Drinks and its entertaining social media content, and Specsavers. And Richard Branson and his stunts for Virgin, and Red Bull and its crazy world record attempts and challenges. And let's not forget social media sensation, and Penwortham estate agent, Michael Bailey who shot to fame with posts like the one where he announced he'd started valuing homes in tubs of Lurpak (at the height of the cost-of-living crisis), or the one where he poked fun at outgoing PM Liz Truss, or his more recent 'Change' campaign that mimicked Labour's election materials. The thread running through them all is a willingness to experiment and to do things others in their respective fields do not. That's what you need to do too. Mitchell Brewing Co.'s cheeky beer name, Osama Bin Lager, is creating a buzz! This light citrus lager has social media thirsty for a taste, temporarily crashing the brewery's website. Brewery owners Luke and Catherine Mitchell told the BBC that the beer names, including Kim Jong Ale and Putin Porter, are meant to be humorous and offer a "nicer outlook on some horrible dictators." This way, families who may not afford brand-new presents can still find something special at a much lower cost. More importantly, it’s a meaningful way to give these toys and books a second life, keeping them out of landfill and spreading joy to others.” The holiday season is the perfect time to embrace sustainability, especially when you consider that Australians generate 30% more waste during Christmas than any other time of the year. Restaurant Branding Tip of the Day (3/4/24): Have a "philanthropy board" in your physical space that shows the nonprofits you regularly donate your time and money to as a company. On the flip side, you can also have a "values in action board" in your physical space that illustrates other things that are important to your company. For instance, one that shows the Brand Values of "Humorous" (stand up shows) or "Creative" (poetry slams) at your restaurant in action. In sum, having some sort of a "Brand Culture Board" is a smart way to not only remind your customers and staff what your company finds most important but also looks good in general on your wall! Palestine Drinks, a brand new soft drink company founded by three Palestinian brothers based in Sweden, has been making waves with its Palestine Cola, selling an impressive four million cans in just under two months. Their motivation? They wanted to offer consumers an alternative to the big players like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, especially since some people were boycotting these brands due to their perceived connections with Israel. What's really heartening is that the brothers aren't just in it for profit. They've pledged to channel their earnings into charities supporting communities in Gaza and the West Bank, through their Safad Foundation. And have you seen their cans? They're adorned with meaningful Palestinian symbols, like the olive tree and the keffiyeh design, showcasing their cultural pride. Despite charitable activities during holidays being considered very important by 1 in 3, 40% advocate for continuous effort throughout the year. Chickens and their chocolate eggs 🐓🍫 Asda took a whimsical approach with its campaign, featuring a surreal farm where chickens lay chocolate eggs. This creative storytelling by Havas aims to highlight that Asda is your go-to destination for all Easter necessities. 47% of British consumers are inclined to shop around for their Easter goodies, pointing towards a competitive market where creativity can set a brand apart. Where in the world are the eggs? 🔎🥚 With a little help from VCCP, Cadbury UK revolutionised the traditional egg hunt with 'The Cadbury Worldwide Hide,' letting people hide virtual eggs anywhere for loved ones to find. While virtual event enthusiasts are few (3%), many (49%) are keen to try, signalling a growing curiosity for virtual celebrations. Takeaways for marketers:  🎨 Creativity mixed with charity: Not only do these kinds of campaigns resonate with consumers emotionally, but our data revealed a growing expectation for brands to embody values of charity and support throughout the year. 📱 Embrace virtual experiences: With a significant portion (49%) open to trying virtual events, there's potential to pioneer in this space.
