The big question for today is does your communication flow through the entire organisation and does it pass the 5 second rule? As people define their brand and layout the experience journey they wish their customers to take....the communication can easily get complicated with each line or added new thought. We loose the fact that those at the front line or the information gained at point of sale delivers the message to the customer. No one can remember, or are even the slightest bit interested in your 40 page brand manual, your 20 slides pitch deck that gained you investment or even how you are disrupting the world. No, they need a simplified ‘three things’ placed into their minds around what they are buying, what it actual does and at least some emotional reason to reach out to buy from you. All with in 5 seconds.... While your story and purpose should guide your business decisions and drive you to operate ethically, the customer does not always need to be involved in this beyond them receiving the feeling that you are doing the right thing. It's about reinforcement of values, not lecturing or marketing blurb. For example: Starbucks should not be telling me how to live my life, they should be selling me great coffee as quickly as possible in a way that you feel they support small coffee growers. Business that are built on legacy, often have very narrow communication and ranges of offerings. They pull back rather than overload the messages both in articulation and visually, create a flow where each employee and each customer who encounters it gets it instantly! As a child we had a game called Chinese whispers, where someone was given a phrase and they had to whisper it into the ear of the person next to them, then they to the next until the message went through the whole classroom with the last person having to say out loud what they heard. Quite often it didn't match the original sentence. The more complicated or unnatural the sentence the harder it was to travel though 20 sets of ears. Communication should be short, tight and so simple that a child can understand it instantly. No long explanations as we all just don't have time to listen.... ------ What are you thoughts on keeping communication simple within your company? ✍️Have you ever thought about the countless decisions that go into crafting a single message? Although I've never written about communication here, it's my field. Working with sustainability, the environment, and social causes is my passion. Connecting these things is how I feel I contribute to our society. I believe in the transformative power of communication and its ability to connect, inspire action, and change. I've often supported non-communicators in their efforts to create content and raise awareness, especially through volunteer work. These experiences have made me realize and see more clearly the complexity of my work and the depth of effective communication. Communication is a nuanced field. It involves countless subtle decisions in crafting each message, from the words we choose to the images we select. Much of this comes from a deep understanding of institutional goals - aligning each project and its communication to serve the broader organization's mission. As our world faces pressing social and environmental challenges, socio-environmental communication becomes ever more crucial. Effective communication is essential for public engagement and action. Our strategic decisions are guided by fundamental questions like "Why are we doing this?" and "What specific messages do we need?" This critical thinking ensures that our efforts are purposeful and impactful. There's a unique joy in transforming a jumble of information and decisions into a compelling story.
