Thrilled to share the news that Mint has secured its first U.S. site in Longview, Texas. This milestone marks the beginning of our U.S. growth strategy to strengthen American critical materials supply chains by turning e-waste into a sustainable source of high-value materials. A large amount of work has gone in to making this possible. A huge thanks to the Mint team and all of our supporters who have helped us reach this point. Excited for what’s to come as we bring our world leading biotechnology to the U.S. and contribute to reshaping the circular economy!

Mint Innovation is pleased to announce our expansion into the United States with the establishment of our first facility in Longview, Texas. This landmark development will provide an onshore solution for e-waste processing in the US, enabling the recovery of critical metals while minimising hazardous waste sent to landfills or exported.

Almost 120 participants were interested in what has been researched and discovered in the #PERFECOAT project (funded by Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU)) on more sustainable paints and coatings (#pigments, #fillers, #binders... the list of keywords is long). Hurdles were also critically examined. At the end, there was an interesting Q&A session and the PERFECOAT team was able to bring the webinar series to a successful conclusion. 🚀 Case Study Spotlight: Advancing Sustainable Resins & Films with Natural Lignin 🌱 Sonichem is exploring the use of natural lignin, derived from forestry biomass, to create more sustainable resins, films, and composites. With support from the IBioIC Feasibility Fund and the University of Glasgow, Sonichem have made strides in chemical modifications to make lignin a viable alternative to petrochemicals. Did you hear the good news? Lygos and CJ Bioscience are partnering to develop a commercial-scale biorefinery complex in Fort Dodge. The partnership combines CJ BIO’s expertise in fermentation and biotechnology with Lygos’ advanced biology, chemistry and application development technologies for high-performing, sustainable solutions. The complex will be part of Iowa’s Crossroads of Global Innovation: an Ag-Industrial campus that fosters collaboration and growth within the biomanufacturing sector, located just west of Fort Dodge. The location features 100% renewable electricity, access to sustainable feedstock, and excellent logistics, making it an ideal location to build a biorefinery. CJ’s existing site is next to Cargill’s Fort Dodge Corn Mill, which will provide utilities and access to plant-derived sugar, a biobased feedstock that can be fermented into the key intermediates for Lygos’ products. Lygos is expected to employ up to 350 temporary workers during construction and create approximately 60 highly skilled jobs once the facility is fully operational. 🌿 Exciting News from Sonichem! 🌿 I'm thrilled to share an article by UKTN that spotlights the groundbreaking work we're doing at Sonichem. We're on a mission to convert sawdust and woodchips into natural, sustainable alternatives to essential chemicals, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Our ambitious goal is to launch Sonichem's first commercial plant by 2027 in Scotland, where we plan to process up to 15,000 tonnes of forestry co-products each year. This is a key step forward as we support the UK's transition away from fossil-based products. The need for sustainable alternatives is particularly acute in the cosmetics, packaging, and automotive industries, which are heavily reliant on petrochemicals. Recent studies, show that these sectors are major contributors to global emissions, with the pharma industry alone surpassing the automotive sector in carbon output. Our work at Sonichem, supported by a feasibility study with the University of Glasgow funded by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre leverages Sonichem's patented ultrasound technology to unlock the potential of lignin. This natural polymer is highly versatile and can replace petrochemicals in many applications. Looking ahead, our focus is on forging strong partnerships with manufacturers and the forestry sector to ensure a sustainable supply chain that supports our innovative technology and helps drive the UK's bioeconomy and meet global net-zero objectives. 🌿ESTELLA Project at GEP 2024 🔬🌿 CIDAUT is proud to be part of the groundbreaking ESTELLA project, which aims to create highly recyclable bio-composites for industrial use. This innovative initiative brings together European experts collaborating across the entire value chain, from biomass precursor extraction to raw material design, manufacturing, and recycling processes. ESTELLA's approach is truly revolutionary: introducing Covalent Adaptive Networks into epoxy resins and utilizing functionalized bio-fibres like nano-cellulose and hemp. Furthermore, the project focuses on adapting manufacturing and recycling processes to significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse emissions. By ensuring the production of materials with excellent properties and maximum component recovery rates, ESTELLA is set to strengthen both the environmental and economic dimensions of the thermoset value chain.
