On July 17, 1914, John and Horace Dodge founded the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company, marking a significant milestone in the history of American automobile manufacturing. Prior to establishing their own company, the Dodge brothers were known for their expertise in precision engineering and their business acumen, having successfully run a bicycle and machine shop. Their venture into the automotive industry commenced as suppliers of high-quality components to other car manufacturers, most notably Ford, with whom they had a significant contract. The establishment of their own company was driven by a vision to create vehicles that stood out for their durability, reliability, and engineering excellence. In the first few years, Dodge Brothers vehicles gained a reputation for their quality and innovation, quickly establishing the company as a major player in the automotive industry. The introduction of all-steel body cars and pioneering features such as 12-volt electrical systems set new standards in car manufacturing, propelling Dodge to become the second-largest car manufacturer in the United States by 1920. The legacy of John and Horace Dodge is not only marked by their contribution to automotive engineering but also by their impact on the manufacturing industry, setting the foundation for what would become one of the most iconic American automobile brands. #milestonesinhistory #automotivehistory #DodgeBrothers #engineeringexcellence #automotiveinnovation #AmericanIcons #precisionengineering #carmanufacturingrevolution

On July 1, 1914, John and Horace Dodge founded the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company in Detroit, Michigan, marking a significant moment in American automotive history. Their decision to establish their own company came from a desire to manufacture their own vehicles, characterized by quality engineering and innovation. In 1899, #HenryFord, then a relatively unknown engineer, launched his first #automobile company, the Detroit Automobile Company. However, due to disagreements among the #partners and the lack of a market for expensive #luxury cars at the time, the venture failed, and the company was dissolved in 1901. Undeterred by this setback, Ford founded his second automobile #company, the Henry Ford Company, in November 1901. With the financial backing of several #investors, including the prominent Detroit lumber baron William H. Murphy, Ford hoped to produce a more #affordable automobile for the masses. However, tensions arose between Ford and his investors over the #direction of the company. Ford was passionate about #innovation and #efficiency, envisioning a car that could be accessible to the average American. However, his investors were more focused on producing high-end, luxury vehicles for the wealthy. Frustrated by the disagreements and feeling constrained by the investors’ vision, Ford left the Henry Ford Company in 1902, taking his name with him. The company was later reorganized into the Cadillac Automobile Company, which eventually became part of General Motors. Despite these setbacks, Ford remained determined to pursue his vision of creating an affordable automobile that would revolutionize #transportation. In 1903, with the financial backing of a #group of investors, including the Dodge brothers, Ford founded the Ford Motor Company. Under Ford’s leadership, the company #introduced the Model T in 1908, which quickly became a symbol of American innovation and ingenuity. Through his innovative assembly line #production techniques and commitment to mass production, Ford was able to significantly reduce the cost of manufacturing automobiles, making them accessible to millions of #people.

Today in tech history, the first Ford Model A is sold to the public in 1903 (1). Ford sells its first Model A car to Ernst Pfenning of Chicago, Illinois. This was Henry Ford’s 3rd attempt at creating a company that manufactured cars, incorporating just over a month earlier. The initial $28,000 investment was down to $300 before this first Model A was sold. However, it was the Model T that solidified Ford’s standing in automotive history. #techhistory #Ford #classiccars __ https://lnkd.in/g7VDuJ_N

Ford CEO Jim Farley I am simply amazed at the utter lack of imagination and the will to make things right in this CEO. Perhaps it would be better if Farley takes Ford out of the continent completely. Simply because his vision doesn't have the balls to compete. As a loyal Ford customer, I am appalled by his statement that he has had enough with "boring cars". Sorry Jim, you made them boring by not keeping up with market and using cheap materials. And of course, wrong planning. Example: both Focus and Kuga share the same platform and interior. Yet made in two different sites. Why? Hyundai makes 3 x models at the same plant in CR. And Focus and Kuga still bring you profits, whereas your EV venture is in the minus. Wake up and make good efficient cars that people want, not what you want to sell to people. Or go and buy all cars yourself! Keeping the stock price up is all you care about. Not what people want, even the loyal customers. What a shame! Keep Ford in the US; but it wont survive for long on trucks alone!

The Ford Motor Company transformed the auto industry in 1908 with the release of the Model T, a car that brought affordable transportation to millions of Americans. 🚗💨 Henry Ford’s goal was to create a vehicle that was durable, simple to operate, and accessible to the average person. Priced initially at $850, Ford's innovative use of the assembly line reduced the production time, allowing the price to drop to as low as $260. By 1927, more than 15 million Model T’s had been sold, making it the best-selling car of its time and connecting rural Americans to the rest of the country. This vehicle not only shifted American life toward urbanization but also set the foundation for modern automobile manufacturing. #ModelT #FordLegacy #AmericanInnovation Alt Text: A black-and-white photo of the 1908 Model T, Ford’s universal car.

The Malaise Era - The Dodge Aspen and Plymouth Volare Here's a vehicle that is likely to be the epitome of The Malaise Era. These vehicles manufactured by Chrysler Corporation were designed to be the replacement to the Dodge Dart and Plymouth Valiant. These vehicles were sold for the 1976 through 1980 model years. Primarily designed to replace what Chrysler considered an aging platform, the Aspen and Volare underwent wind tunnel influence and a weight-saving approach to make the model more efficient. The focus here was on fuel economy, a quieter compact vehicle and a ride quality of a larger vehicle. All in all, the vehicle was styled in a way that was modern and attractive for the era. Buyers could get the economical Chrysler "Super Six", a 225 CID inline-6 cylinder engine that is also called "Slant Six" due to it laying 30 degrees to the passenger side of the vehicle, then a 318 CID 2-barrel V8 followed by a 360 CID 4-barrel V8. The 360 CID 4-barrel V8 was discontinued for the 1980 model year. While all of this appeared to be a success for Chrysler, the tale of woe was just beginning. This vehicle sold well with 1.8 million copies. The recalls for safety and quality plagued these vehicles and they were quickly eroding any profitability hopes for Chrysler. Lee Iacocca restyled the vehicle in 1980 and then discontinued it in favor of the K-Cars that would come in 1981. Few realize that the Chrysler M-body (Aspen / Volare) was repurposed as the Chrysler platform for the Dodge Diplomat, Plymouth Gran Fury and yes, the iconic Chrysler Fifth Avenue! Give the credit for repurposing the platform to Lee Iacocca! Looking back, these vehicles were attractive and styled to capture those who were shopping for a fuel efficient vehicle while trying to hang on to the comfort of the past. Just call this a swing and a miss! Featured below is a Dodge Aspen in full trim. A nice looking vehicle that fell apart.
