Innovation happens all the time. It’s the sign of a great organization when it follows through on ideas and takes risks that lead to better outcomes for everyone, not just shareholders. How are you fostering innovation in your organization? Consider an everything in the table approach. If you solicit ideas, consider posting them publicly to the broader team if they need more development. Often that exposure will spark additional ideas and improvement. Showing a willingness to take on different approaches is at the heart of of a successful improvement culture.

Sell less cars?! Just yesterday, New AutoMotive shared the latest position on how OEMs are performing against the ZEV target. Ford looked to be the most challenged in terms of performance so far. Meanwhile, at the FT future of the car summit, Ford’s head of Model E in Europe, Martin Sander, was being interviewed by Peter Campbell. Martin claimed they were on plan but monitoring the situation closely. However, the really interesting element was that he was clear that if they are off track, then they will not pay fines or take a loss on EV sales….. instead they will just sell less ICE cars (by increasing pricing). First time I’ve heard an OEM explicitly say they will take this approach. Selling less cars would be good for sustainability, but I never expected Ford to be leading the charge on that! Feels counterintuitive, but it’s one of the unintended consequences of the legislation. What are your thoughts? #ftcar #zev #electricvehicles #ford James Carter Ade Thomas Roger Atkins

In most industries, talking about volume reduction as a strategy is taboo, but here's Ford doing just that. For a big car maker to suggest that they would choose to sell fewer cars is extraordinarily unusual. But dig into what Ford is saying and it's not really a strategic choice, more a tactical response to bumpiness in their transition to EVs. Maybe not so bold, but a glimpse of some long overdue unorthodox thinking? The debate raises a thorny #brandstrategy x #sustainability question which needs to be addressed to help shift corporate strategy. In a world which is moving towards mobility (fewer vehicles overall, much better utilised), and a world in which overproduction and chasing share begins to look like dinosaur behaviour, how should the 'car' brand of the future position themselves? It's got to be more nuanced thing than "go big or go home". Feels like an opportunity for a challenger to tilt the market, but I'm not sure that any of the EV brands are making the most of this. (I am always struck by how much of the sentiment around Tesla still focuses on quarterly volumes). Would be great to see the same debate in clothing. Would a clothing brand prefer to forfeit volume if it meant avoiding using "big footprint" materials and processes? What's the nuanced brand positioning for a planet friendly apparel company? #brandstrategy #sustainability
