The South East Regional Maternity and Neonatal Team has developed some regional Induction of labour shared principles, to support conversations about induction of labour delays, why they may occur and how maternity staff work to keep birthing people safe during this time. To benefit from maternity leave employees must inform their employer no later than the end of the fifteenth week before the expected week of childbirth. The employee must inform their employer that: a) they are pregnant b) the week that the baby is due c) when the employee wishes to start the maternity leave The employer must respond within 28 days, confirming the date of when the maternity leave will end, which will be 52 weeks from the start of the maternity leave. 7 months into maternity leave, a reflection: let's stop believing that Canada's maternity leave government supports are great just because they're not as bad as America's. I'm fortunate to have an employer that has provided a substantial top-up for the last 7 months, but why is that the exception? Getting EI for up to $35k TAXABLE income for a year is NOT sufficient to support a woman and baby for a year in this day and age, and especially in a city like Toronto. Let's stop pretending Canada's maternity leave system is great or even sufficient. Even if you don't like or have or want kids, maternity supports=healthier children=better workforce of the future.
