Waaay back in 2020, when we all had more time to ponder the important things in life. I was inspired by Derek Sivers’ Directives, to write my own Directives for the Architecture Profession. I came up with 25 in all. They could probably do with a good edit. But I’m pleased they still hold up pretty well. They fall into 3 categories: 1. How to do meaningful work 2. How to better work 3. The architecture profession hasn't changed much in 50 years. But what if that's exactly why it’s losing opportunities? Status quo is comfortable. Awards, publications, and peer recognition keep us in familiar territory. But while celebrating yesterday's achievements, is worthwhile and important, others are moving ahead leaving the profession behind. I’m always reminded of how Buckminster Fuller put it: "To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." As always, Michael Lewarne is asking the provocative questions! The latest one? Would architecture look different if the title wasn't protected? I asked a version of this question back in February too - in my blog series about architecture fees, salaries and the protected title - and I concluded that legal protections don't count for much in the minds of consumers of architectural services... ... which means that architects "have to take responsibility – individually at a practice level, and collectively at a professional level – to articulate and communicate what sets you apart, why your service is the best fit for your intended client, and most importantly, WHY THEY SHOULD CARE."
