Your expectations vs. their expectations. My wife and I talk about this all the time. Birthday parties, special occasions, gifts, clothes, cups... When kids are little their expectations are simple. When adults get involved we elevate the expectations in unrealistic and unsustainable ways. You think they need a party with decorations and streamers, cake, friends and a bunch of presents. They just need cake and family. You think they need the latest clothes, a stanley cup and all the latest sports equipment. They just want to dress how they want and play the game. You think they should be popular, primped and pressed every day. They just want to go hang out with their friends. I'm a believer that we set the standards. And I see all the time parents that set that bar much higher than our kids would even expect. They don't need a night out on the town. They need one on one time with Mom and Dad.
