Liverpool City Region Combined Authority shares the news that #LCRCA2024 | Designs for a new £32m St Helens Transport interchange were revealed in October ahead of a planning application being submitted. The interchange will create better links between bus, rail and active travel routes and is part of a wider regeneration set to transform St Helens Town Centre. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which opened on September 15, 1830, is often celebrated in October as a pivotal milestone in the history of rail transportation. This pioneering railway was the first to rely exclusively on steam power, without the aid of horse-drawn vehicles, and to provide a scheduled passenger service. It also marked the first time two major cities were directly connected by rail. The railway's opening ceremony was attended by notable figures of the time, including the British Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington. The railway was the brainchild of businessmen from Liverpool and Manchester who sought a faster and more reliable means of transporting raw materials and finished goods between the two industrial hubs. Designed by George Stephenson, the line stretched approximately 35 miles and featured several engineering marvels of its time, such as the Rainhill Skew Bridge and the Sankey Viaduct. The introduction of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway catalyzed a transport revolution, exemplifying the potential of railways to transform economies and societies. It facilitated industrial growth, reduced travel time significantly, and set the stage for the development of a comprehensive railway network across Britain and beyond. The best highway in the UK can be subjective, depending on criteria such as scenic beauty, traffic flow, or connectivity. However, one of the most highly regarded highways in the UK is the M6 Toll. This motorway is praised for its smooth traffic flow and well-maintained condition, offering a more efficient alternative to the often congested M6. If scenic beauty is a key consideration, the A82, running from Glasgow to Inverness through the Scottish Highlands, is often highlighted for its stunning landscapes, passing by Loch Lomond and through Glencoe. For overall connectivity and importance, the M1, which runs from London to Leeds, is considered one of the most critical motorways in the UK, connecting major cities and facilitating significant commercial transport.

It was fantastic to attend the Northern Transport Summit on Thursday hosted by one of our key clients, Manchester Airport Group. The level of ambition and vision outlined by the Metro Mayors is exactly what the North of England requires. They are really grabbing hold of the agenda, working together and learning from each other so that there is a consistent approach to government. We have already started to see the successful rollout of the Bee Network in Manchester by Andy Burnham. As a result, there is more challenge back to Government that the North will not accept sub par infrastructure, and more evidence based optioneering now done in the north by people who know the north. This is not about transport, it is about growth. Making opportunities more accessible to more people. Rail Stations as a driver for wider Place based regeneration was also a key theme that came from the Mayors, to further support the business case for how these benefits will reap benefits for their communities. To maximise this, the public and private sector will have to innovate so that we can deliver things like the Mass Transit system in West Yorkshire, an underground station at Piccadilly and the regeneration of the Liverpool Central Station area in the future.
