On the 10th day of #12DaysofBroadband we reflect on Hurricane Helene’s impact in the western part of the state and how MCNC was instrumental in bringing connectivity back to those communities while still supporting ongoing recovery efforts months later. Installing fiber-optic infrastructure has always been a challenge in Western North Carolina due to its unique geography and mountainous terrain; repairing it fast in the midst of devastation is a whole new level. Did you know that Earth and climate system models are so finely tuned that nowadays, scientists can accurately predict seasonal storms? According to Professor Mann's group, this year, the North Atlantic hurricane season could bring up to 39 tropical cyclones—a record-breaking number. Seasonal storm frequency and intensity are highly influenced by Anthropogenic #globalwarming. Another proof that #climatechange poses a big risk to human life and many other species.
"Michael Mann and colleagues predict a record-breaking 33 named storms for the 2024 North Atlantic hurricane season. It is the highest count ever projected" via #PennToday (Penn Arts & Sciences, University of Pennsylvania and Mann Research Group) University of Pennsylvania News: https://lnkd.in/gRMcGY5A

🌧️ #TropicalStormDebby, which started as a category 1 hurricane, is gaining momentum as it travels up the East Coast. OptiRTC’s CMAC in Aiken, SC created an additional 3 acre-feet of storage in advance of the storm and optimized water levels between two underground detention vaults. This proactive management allowed Opti to increase storage capacity and effectively mitigate flooding in the downstream Hitchcock Woods, enhancing community resilience. Watch our recent webinar on how Aiken has optimized their underground detention system: https://lnkd.in/ecMac6Ut Aliaxis Next #Opti #StormwaterManagement #StormStory

Please take a moment and read this Facebook post regarding the impact that Hurricane Helene has had on the water supply in affected regions. Most do not plan for or think about the 1st, second and 3rd order effects resulting from a sudden loss of access to running, clean water. Individuals in Florida's Big Bend area (Eastern Panhandle) are having to gather clean water from wells or other areas and transport them around, if they are lucky enough to have transportation. Otherwise it is being flown into areas by helicopter, like the Blue Ridge Mountains region in North Carolina. It is instances such as these, which will start increasing in intensity and frequency, that will increase the necessity for our humanitarian agencies (FEMA/Local Gov't/Military) to start utilizing more of the available, cutting-edge water filtration/atmospheric water harvesting technology from companies such as: Gyrene Engineering Management and Flotration Technologies LLC, just to name a couple. Also, with the power being cut out for an unknown amount of time (latest update), companies such as Pvilion can be used to deploy temporary living shelters with flexible solar panels and storage batteries to power emergency medical/relief centers without the need to compound air and ground asset logistical issues by increasing the fuel demand for gas generators. Thanks for reading my rant, this is a near and dear issue to me that needs to be addressed. Innovation can be applied to the humanitarian, domestic realm. We don't always need to invest everything into defense tech, let's hope the funding pathways open up in the future given recent events. https://lnkd.in/gaVutGAj

As Forbes recently said, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is forecasted to hit a record-setting pace, with a number that would shatter the historical average after a turbulent few seasons marked by devastating storms. This has implications for workforce development boards (WDBs) along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. EconoVue is proud to support WDBs to proactively identify higher-risk businesses in hurricane-prone areas and prioritize them for the post-impact availability of disaster assistance programs and resources. https://lnkd.in/e9Gzv8Jq #WorkforceDevelopment #DisasterRecovery #BusinessImpact
