Uganda is working on setting up a new internet cable route through Tanzania as part of the 𝙽𝚘𝚛𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚗 𝙲𝚘𝚛𝚛𝚒𝚍𝚘𝚛 𝙸𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚐𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝙿𝚛𝚘𝚓𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚜 (NCIP). This initiative, announced by Ambassador Patrick Kabonero, Uganda's NCIP coordinator, during a summit in Kampala, aims to reduce the country's reliance on Kenya, through which all of Uganda's current internet traffic currently passes. The decision to establish this new internet cable route comes in the wake of a recent regional internet outage caused by disruptions in the SEACOM and EASSy subsea cables. Kabonero emphasized the importance of this project in ensuring more reliable internet service in the region, underscoring the need to diversify the network infrastructure. Alongside the new internet cable route, there are ongoing discussions about creating a One Area Network (OAN) across East Africa. This plan, backed by telecom companies in the region, aims to lower data costs, increase internet traffic, and facilitate easier cross-border transactions, further integrating the East African countries. The NCIP covers various infrastructure projects, including railways, oil pipelines, and boosting electricity interconnectivity. Uganda is leading the development of the Standard Gauge Railway and improving ICT infrastructure as part of these efforts. Despite progress, Kabonero acknowledged that funding remains a challenge for NCIP projects, calling for greater involvement from finance ministries. I will be attending ITW Africa in Nairobi this week to discuss the critical need for increased investment in Africa's digital infrastructure, focusing on areas such as optic fibre networks, data centres, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), and satellite infrastructure, including gateways and both high and low altitude platforms (HAPs & LAPs). For example, South Africa currently has 450 megawatts of data centre IT load, but we will need an additional 500 megawatts over the next seven years. This expansion will require approximately $7 million per megawatt, amounting to a total investment of around $3 billion

This partnership aims to utilize CAMWATER's existing infrastructure, such as pipes and conduits, to facilitate the installation of fibre optic cables, particularly in major cities like Douala and Yaounde. Judith YAH SUNDAY, CAMTEL's general manager, emphasized that this agreement is crucial for securing metropolitan loops and achieving nationwide coverage by 2030. Similarly, the Kenyan government is intensifying efforts to expand internet connectivity by leveraging existing power infrastructure. Information, Communications and the Digital Economy CS ELIUD OWALO announced that Kenya Power and Lighting Company has been contracted to lay fiber optic cables alongside power transmission lines, aiming to reach every transformer and eventually every electricity meter in Kenya. These initiatives demonstrate a growing trend across Africa of leveraging existing utility infrastructure to expand digital connectivity.
