Today we’re showcasing 3 innovators in Spain selected to present at LSI Europe ‘24 in Portugal: 1. Jorge Presa — Cyber Surgery → Developed ALAYA, a first-of-its-kind, modular innovative robotic navigation for multipurpose and seamless spinal procedures. ALAYA’s patented technology allows surgeons to achieve the highest levels of precision, to perform minimally invasive spinal operations, reducing risk and patient recovery times. 2. Pablo Fernández Echeverría — Polimerbio → Focused on the research, development, and manufacture of biodegradable medical devices based on the company's extensive knowledge and experience in polymer chemistry. Within the company's portfolio of products in development are a biodegradable stent for the treatment of urethral stricture and scaffolds for the regeneration of spinal cord injuries. 3. Oriol Iborra Egea — NIMBLE Diagnostics → The NIMBLE System, is a first-in-class, non-invasive, non-ionizing microwave-based technology that enables cardiologists to obtain objective data about the status of coronary stents. This allows cardiologists to take control of their patients with heart failure, providing objective data through a convenient, non-invasive technology, aiming to save millions of lives. 💥 Congrats to our biotech participant Synergia Medical for its incredible optoelectronic neurostimulation application! 🧠   ⚡ This new optoelectronic neurostimulation system, called ‘NAO.VNS’, has been implanted for the first time in the world on two patients with refractory epilepsy at Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc and UZ Gent. These patients, who did not respond to medication and could not undergo brain surgery, began their neurostimulation treatment two weeks after the operation. The system uses light via optoelectronic materials, offering advantages such as longer battery life, greater compatibility with MRI scanners and enhanced safety. It brings hope to patients who do not respond to conventional treatments.   🚀 This is another breakthrough for health, medicine and patient wellbeing. Well done to the teams for this fantastic work! The team’s findings on endothelialisation bring us closer to creating engineered tissue materials designed for use in life-saving heart surgeries—a true breakthrough in biomaterials science. RALV in the Innovation Corner at the Technical Museum Vienna   The presentation format "Innovation Corner" at the Vienna Technical Museum offers a platform to present Austrian start-ups on a quarterly basis that achieve outstanding achievements in a wide variety of scientific fields. In the current round ten projects from the fields of medical technology and life sciences are presented. The thematic spectrum was created in cooperation with the Lower Austrian technology financing company tecnet equity and the technology incubator accent.   The RALV device was also selected to be presented in the Innovation Corner of the Vienna Technical Museum. The exhibition "Innovations in Medical Technology and Life Sciences" will be on display from June 3 to September 29, 2024.   With increasing age, the eye loses the ability to adapt to different distances of vision. This presbyopia is mainly caused by a hardening of the natural lens of the eye. The replacement of the natural lens with an artificial lens can provide relief. It is important to find the best lens model for each patient before surgery. RALV allows presbyopic patients to experience preoperative vision through true intraocular lenses (IOL) to experience postoperative vision with an IOL before the implantation.   ACMIT developed the RALV optical system in collaboration with 1stQ Deutschland GmbH, an internationally renowned manufacturer of intraocular lenses. We’re pleased to share that C-Flow, a MedTech startup launched through WIN - Weizmann Innovation Nest, the startup studio of the Weizmann innovation ecosystem, has successfully completed the initial clinical test of its next-gen perfusion imaging system. Developed with the support of YEDA - Technology Transfer Company of Weizmann Institute of Science and Sheba Impact, this technology delivers real-time insights into tissue health during reconstructive surgery, advancing surgical decision-making and patient care. This milestone reflects C-Flow's development approach, which emphasizes rapid iteration and close collaboration with surgeons to address critical clinical needs. As Dr. Nathan Persky, CEO of C-Flow, noted: "This success is a key step toward enabling informed, timely decisions in the operating room and improving patient outcomes." C-Flow will now focus on further clinical evaluations and regulatory approvals, paving the way for global implementation in operating rooms. What will the next generation of treatment look like? When elastic recoil was first an issue from balloons, we invented bare metal stents. When bare metal stents had restenosis issues, we invented drug eluding stents. When Paclitaxel was not performing well in the coronaries, we used the ‘olimus drugs. When there were still incidents of ISR and late lumen loss with DES, companies changed the polymer, thinned struts and improved the absorption and healing process. Now technology is exploring changing the scaffolds absorption capabilities and drug eluding balloons in the coronaries to avoid an implant altogether.
