Pike School of Art - Mississippi Our design for Pike School of Art reimagines the former Pike County Youth Detention Center in McComb, Mississippi, into a vibrant space that connects the community through art and education. Key architectural elements drive this transformation: - Railroad + Reorientation: At the heart of McComb’s identity, 53-foot upcycled shipping containers form the elevated second level, reflecting the town’s railroad history, where these containers first gained purpose. - Connection: An elevated volume visually bridges PSA’s four main zones with bold graphics, giving a cohesive, fluid experience to the space. - Cell Spaces: Preserved as historical artifacts, the original cells remain part of the experience, inviting artists, students, and locals to engage with the building’s layered history. - Open Facade: Facing 5th Avenue, artist residencies, public programs, and a computer lab bring transparency and openness, making the building a visible invitation for community engagement. #PikeSchoolofArt #McCombMS #CommunityArchitecture #CulturalProject #UpcycledContainers #ArtAndDesign #EducationalSpaces #ArchitectureHistory #Transforming #Upcycling

"For Sno-Isle Libraries' reimagined Edmonds Library, we designed and constructed a floor-to-ceiling installation with 3,220 holes lit by individual LED lights, similar to a giant Lite-Brite toy. JA Design Technologist and Associate Shane Leaman designed custom circuit boards to connect the 1,088 magnetic sensors behind the board, which sense when acrylic pegs embedded with a small magnet are inserted into the lower holes. When these pegs are inserted into the wall, the program responds using those LED lights in a myriad of ways." - Jack Chaffin, JA Partner https://lnkd.in/gcJp4uY8 #librarydesign #libraryarchitecture #libraryscience #libraryprogramming #librarians #childrenslibrary #earlyliteracy #welovelibraries #earlylearning #kidslibrary #digitalintegration #activeplayelement #activelearning #snoislelibraries #edmondslibrary #washingtonlibraries #communitylibrary #publiclibrary #libraryremodel #libraryrenovation #libraryupgrade

Dr. Jennifer Charlot, Ed.L.D’s second favorite thing? Making learning real for students through community partnerships. 🚦 Ms. Felisa Rivera and her fourth grade science class teamed up with the NYC Center for Architecture and Transportation Alternatives to tackle pedestrian safety around the school. Her students audited dangerous street intersections to collect data, then built 3D models showing their own ideas for how urban design can create safer spaces for everyone. 🏙✨ When learning meets real-world action, change happens. 🚸 #JennsFavoriteThings #SaferStreets #STEMInTheClassroom #UrbanDesign #NYCSchools #StudentChangemakers #BronxEducation #ProjectBasedLearning

This recent article from The Christian Science Monitor on Destination Crenshaw highlights the need for cultural design and intentional public/private investments -- something so necessary can feel like gentrification if we collectively turn our back on what improvement is needed for the people living in our communities today. Surviving or flourishing is our choice. Crenshaw chooses FLOURSHING.
Sharing some of The Christian Science Monitor's recent article on Destination Crenshaw, "From overlooked to must-see. LA community’s big statement with Black-centered art." “These things are so tied intrinsically together, the money with the architecture with the benefit of the community,” says Valery Augustin, AIA, an architect and assistant professor at the University of Southern California. “You need that investment for communities to stay places that people want to go to. And if people won’t invest in communities, then your built areas can’t possibly thrive.” We could not agree more. https://lnkd.in/ee5sTh_H

Three student projects will be showcased at Lights On Stratford, an annual festival running until January 19, 2025, as part of the course Special Topics in Media Architecture, highlighting the students' ability to merge technology and the arts. 🎨💡 “I wanted to think about the land acknowledgement as more than just this ceremonial thing we do.” - David Han In only 10 weeks, students were tasked with creating interactive installations that prompt audiences to reflect on local, non-human activity across time. The design process taught at the School begins with thorough research and early-stage presentations for feedback. 🧠🔍 As part of this process, 12 student teams presented their prototype installations to a panel of representatives from Lights On, the City of Stratford, and the Stratford School. The top three selected to be on display are: 🌊 A Living Entity: An interactive installation that animates the Avon River, highlighting its significance for Stratford's future. Team members: Fiona Qi Feng, Cathy Le, Christopher Ho, Finn Duncan-Snobel, Kelly Wu, Adriano Campisi, Yolanda Liu, Caden Chan, Steven Poung 🌙 Nocturnal Visions: This project raises awareness about the crucial roles of nocturnal animals, showcasing their unique behaviours and environmental contributions. Team members: Bernice Heng, Gleb Ellik, Nathenia Meng, Macy LeConte, Jodi Ng, Jason Feng, Jerry Chen, Joel Kim 🍄 Fungi: Beyond the Eye: An exploration of the hidden world of fungi roots, known as mycelium, native to Stratford. Team members: Dasha Sterehova, Chantel Wai, Cameron Dunn, Sara Kanana, Olivia Dunford, Zenia Rangwala, Anthony Chen, Lena Schiffler, Alex Robertson The course, GBDA 412 – Special Topics in Media Architecture, was designed and taught by David Han, a media artist and PhD candidate in Cinema & Media Arts at York University.

The intersection of art and culture in California is nowhere more evident than in its glorious murals. These murals not only bring color; they turn buildings into canvases. These murals serve another function: increasing the sense of pride and ownership within the community for their living spaces. Buildings become something other than mere living spaces; they become liveable art. Artists like Favianna Rodriguez, whose work often addresses social justice issues, have played a massive role in bringing cultural pride and community spirit to the people of Oakland. Art fosters community building and cultural amalgamation. While minimalism in color and design ensures timelessness, it does not elevate people's sense of belonging and pride in their lives. At Riaz Capital, our ethos is driven by a need to care for the people we cater to. Affordable housing does not need to be; it can be a canvas to showcase the art that is uniquely Californian. With Artthaus Studios at the helm, we created the Riaz Capital Art program. Through this venture, we invite select artists to our buildings as their canvases. With the help of Artthaus Studios' colorful flair, we have transformed living spaces from grim accommodations to art. See more of our Riaz Capital Art Program at https://lnkd.in/gfMRUGXA
