When things are blurry, we want the magical playbook that will tell us what to do.
I catch myself doing this all the time. Thinking “what am I supposed to do here?” or “what’s the right way to handle this?”
Sure, a playbook does work for some things. But not when strategy, creativity, complex dependencies, relationships, etc. are involved. We’re not going to find the silver-bullet playbook.
So… what are we supposed to do?? (Ironic, yes 😉)
1. Assess - get as much info as you need for step 2…
2. Understand - get your head around what happened and what the end goal is. Not only from your perspective, but also from the perspective of anyone who is relevant.
3. Trust - the hardest step! You have to trust yourself. With the context from steps 1 and 2, along with the core values you already hold, your version of step 4 will be the right one given the circumstance.
4. Decide! Pick something that will move you closer to the end goal. There’s often more than one way to get there, so remember what you just did in step 3 and commit to your decision.
The takeaway? You already have your values. Gather context. Trust yourself. Make decisions to make progress.
