Amazon's strategic shift: From in-house to partnerships in global grocery delivery - RIP Amazon Fresh in Germany Amazon is recalibrating its approach to the complex world of online grocery delivery. After years of developing its own services, the company announced the termination of Amazon Fresh in Berlin, effective December 14, 2024. This move follows recent partnerships with local e-grocers: knuspr.de in Germany and Jüsto in Mexico. These collaborations enable Amazon Prime members to access a wide range of fresh products through established regional platforms, reflecting a strategic pivot from building proprietary services to leveraging local expertise. The online grocery sector, often considered the "Königsdisziplin" (crown discipline) of e-commerce, presents unique challenges that differ significantly from non-food retail. Amazon's experience underscores that success in non-food domains doesn't automatically translate to the food sector. By shifting from a "make" to a "partner" strategy, Amazon is adapting to these complexities. Looking ahead, could Amazon's next move be to "buy"? With its robust infrastructure and market presence, Rohlik Group, the parent company of Knuspr, stands out as a potential candidate. Their successful model aligns with Amazon's objectives, making them a noteworthy player in this evolving landscape... As the #ACCC labels Australia’s supermarket landscape as an “oligopoly”, #Amazon is emerging as a significant competitor. Now the second-largest online retailer in the country, according to GoldmanSachs, Amazon is working to enhance its logistics network, aiming for same-day delivery in major Australian cities by 2026. Projected gross merchandise volume for Amazon in Australia is expected to grow from A$4.5 billion to A$6.5 billion this year, with the company targeting increased penetration of the grocery market. Online grocery shopping accounts for just 7% of sales in Australia pointing to Amazon’s significant opportunity for market expansion. #Amazon Fresh shuts down in Germany 🙅🇩🇪 The online retailer will close its DE Fresh operation on 14 December. The move comes just days after Amazon announced a partnership with local retailer Knuspr, expected to continue fresh grocery deliveries to Prime members. I’ve predicted Amazon to shut down its European Fresh operations since early last year. Could the UK be next? 🇬🇧 Strong competition from discounters Aldi UK, Lidl GB, Morrisons, & Co. makes UK Fresh stores look like graveyards. Amazon Fresh has failed to deliver on growth targets after the pandemic and to address the needs of ultra-price-sensitive shoppers going through a cost-of-living crisis. If Amazon would play its cards right, it would close down its Fresh business in the UK and focus on non-perishable low ASP selection to strengthen its Core Grocery arm. --- Do you think Amazon Fresh has a future in Europe? Who is winning the UK retail war, Amazon or Tesco? And why should you care? The 105 year old juggernaught has a comfortable lead over the 30 year old upstart. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴? In the past five years, Amazon has grown their UK retail sales by 𝟵𝟯%, whilst Tesco has only managed 𝟭𝟱%. There is still a sizeable gap between the two, with Tesco doing £25bn more in sales last year than Amazon. But Amazon is hot on Tesco's tail and will continue to outpace their rate of growth over the next decade. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞'𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗿. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴? Online retail and traditional grocery are clearly two very different channels. But the lines are blurring. Any brand that is listed, or aspires to be listed in Tesco, shouldn't ignore the immense customer base and revenue opportunities that exist on Amazon. How long do you think it will take for Amazon to take the crown? 👑 Let me know in the comments. #amazon #brandstrategy #d2c #dtc #ecommerce #marketplaces #onlineretail #retail #retailstrategy #amazonvendor #amazonseller Sources: • 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢 • 𝘛𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘰 𝘍𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥

Amazon’s got big plans to dominate e-grocery. (Plot twist at the end.) E-grocery growth is crushing E-com growth. I mean, this is a route. And while Amazon lost market share of e-grocery in 2023… Theyre not a company to bet against. In fact, they’ve unleashed the dogs of war. Here’s what they’re doing to win the battle for grocery delivery: -> Roll-out of more Amazon Fresh locations. (They reached 52 last month.) -> Stocking popular Amazon and Whole Foods items at Amazon Fresh FC’s. -> Converting key Whole Foods locations to Amazon micro FC’s. -> Partnering with Weis Markets to list their inventory on Amazon.com. -> Adding curbside pickup as an option for Whole Foods Amazon listings. But here’s what most people are missing: How does all of this help Amazon.com win in e-grocery? Amazon.com becomes 𝘵𝘩𝘦 e-grocery platform. Not Walmart.com or Instacart or DoorDash. My money is on delivery. But it’s 𝙣𝙤𝙩 not on Amazon. ——— 🔹 We drive velocity in Sprouts, Whole Foods, Walmart, Target, Walgreens, CVS, Kroger, Sam's, COSTCO, and lots of other retailers. 🔹 We grow brands on Amazon. #cpg #cpggrowth #retailgrowth #retailvelocity #omnichannel #retail #amazonagency #retailmedia #shoppermarketing #instacart #retailtech

Amazon.com is testing new grocery formats that blend its broad assortment of online goods with in-person shopping, as the nation’s largest e-commerce retailer strains to expand its role in a market dominated by grocery giants with sprawling store networks. Amazon’s new designs aim to pull together various fulfillment networks for its Whole Foods Market premium grocery business and its mass-market Amazon Fresh stores into a common delivery platform, giving the grocery businesses greater scale with online customers as rivals including Walmart, Target and Kroger invest more in using their larger numbers of stores as distribution hubs. The company’s goal is to create one-stop shopping for products ranging from organic produce to Tide detergent and Cheez-It crackers and eliminate the need for shoppers to visit multiple stores. #retail #groceryindusty #logistics Liz Young Sarah Nassauer David Bishop https://lnkd.in/ejK5qeWM

🛒 Welcome to Amazon Grocery Are you tired of visiting multiple stores for your groceries? Amazon just opened a 3800 square foot store called Amazon grocery in Chicago. They want to offer one-stop shopping from organic products to takeout-lunch and detergents under one roof. 💻 While Amazon leads the retail market online, it has struggled to build a presence in the physical world. The US grocery market is estimated at $1,5 trillion. It acquired Whole Foods in 2017 but faces competition from Walmart, Target, Kroger... 🏪 Walmart stores are located within 10 miles of 90% of the population, a unique coverage. 🏪 In 2023, 10% of groceries were bought online, up from 5% in 2019. That is the latest attempt of Amazon to build a brick-and-mortar business.

knuspr.de joins forces with Amazon ! A game-changer or the start of an exit for the Rohlik Group ? This bold partnership between Knuspr and Amazon is making waves! Prime members can now shop for their weekly groceries with Knuspr on Amazon, accessing a vast selection of 15,000 products, from essentials to ultra-fresh local goods from over 160 suppliers—all with three-hour delivery! Starting in Berlin, this service will soon roll out to Munich and Rhein-Main, bringing Knuspr’s quality and convenience to even more customers. Pros of this partnership: • Enhanced Convenience: Prime members can enjoy seamless weekly shopping on a trusted platform. • Access to Amazon’s Traffic: Knuspr gains from Amazon’s massive traffic, boosting visibility and reaching a broader customer base. • Product Variety & Quality: An extensive range of locally sourced products elevates the shopping experience. • Fast Delivery: Three-hour delivery meets today’s on-demand lifestyle. Cons to consider: • Brand Identity: Can Knuspr maintain its unique brand while partnering with Amazon? • Operational Complexity: Expanding to new regions will require operational agility to uphold delivery promises. • Competition & Exclusivity: This partnership might limit Knuspr’s potential reach with other retail platforms. Is this a strategic move toward an exit for Rohlik? Could this be Amazon’s solution to finally capture the online grocery market in Europe after years of challenges? Big implications for the industry ahead! Either way, congratulations Tomáš, Mark and team! #Knuspr #Amazon #Partnership #GroceryShopping #FoodTech #Ecommerce #GroceryDelivery #PrimeMembers #OnlineShopping #Retail #AmazonPrime #GermanMarket #LocalSuppliers #Logistics #BrandIdentity #RohlikGroup #ExitStrategy #GrowthStrategy #FoodInnovation #EuropeanMarket

Grocery Delivery Wars: Amazon / Whole Foods is coming in hot. As digital retail continues to grow like wild fire… Amazon joins Walmart and Target with its own a delivery subscription. Is it enough to get Amazon and Whole Foods back in the race? Here is Amazon now stacks up against the other delivery giants. WALMART. -Leverages it’s own in-house delivery service. -Unique value thru express delivery hours (from 6am). -Rapidly expanding drone delivery with Wing and Zipline. -Free delivery with Walmart+ for $12.95/mo. TARGET. -Home delivery with Shipt (acquired in 2017). -Intermediate ‘Sortation Centers’ for faster fulfillment. -Free home delivery with Target Circle 360 at $99 per year. AMAZON. -Delivery thru w/ AMZ Fresh, Whole Foods, etc. -Piloting drone delivery in multiple locations. -Discounts and incentives for EBT & SNAP shoppers. -Free unlimited grocery delivery for Prime customers at $9.99/mo. Is this enough to get Amazon into the grocery delivery game? It’s hard to tell at this point, but… Brands using Whole Foods Retail Media may get an added velocity boost. ——— 🔹Driving shelf turn in Kroger, Whole Foods, Albertsons, Costco, Walmart, Sprouts, and More 🔹DM me or book an appointment for help! #ecommerce #retailmedia #retailvelocity #retail #cpggrowth #instacart #cpg #tradespend
