Did you know our brains have 3 gears? And why 'downtime' is as important as 'uptime' for our mental well-being? In case you can't read the article (or don't want to) here's a brief summary: Gear 1, idling: the mind can wander/wonder freely, to daydream, imagine, fantasize... Gear 2, focussed: highly engaged and attentive on a specific task, project or problem... Gear 3, hyperalert: quick to respond to an emergency or crisis - panic mode! The problem with the drive for productivity is spending so much time in Gear 2 we spill over into Gear 3 (stress and overload) and forget about the value of Gear 1.... Be wary of the relentless push for productivity....

Do you Take Dumps? Researchers at the University of Oregon concluded that the human brain can only hold 4 discrete thoughts at once. Well, for most people anyways. On an avg day, I’m in 6 meetings, trying to work on 3-5 key things, triaging 250 emails, sending 50, and responding to 20ish Teams Chats, + Texts/Calls, etc. It can be incredibly hard to be present and shift focus from topic to topic when my brain has already reached max capacity. You become forgetful, less productive, and less creative as the day progresses. I’ve actually had to tell my team, “its the end of the day, my mind is a bit fried, let’s pick this back up tomorrow morning when we’re all fresh. We need our best thinking on this.” So for anyone else running on max capacity or seeking to mentally declutter, here's what I have found most helpful for staying present and functional as long as possible. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝘁𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 to make more room. Literally it’s called a “𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝘂𝗺𝗽” 😉 Take a 𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 to zoom out – ever heard of Pomodoro? 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 – reset the nervous system But by far the most effective for me is the brain dump. How does it work? I write things down. My notes are my saving grace. On my best days, I take them as I go through each meeting. On my worst days, I batch them, and invest 15-20 minutes at some point during the day to get everything out. Every uncompleted task, all the key takeaways and thoughts. All of the projects I need to move forward. Everything I’m overthinking or whatever is on my mind – whether it’s professional or personal, doesn’t matter, the key is to move it from your first brain to your second brain (your notes). It has helped expand my mental bandwidth and energy so I can center my focus on one task at a time and generate new thoughts/ideas at a consistent pace.
