TikTok announced the launch of Fan Spotlight, a brand new artist-first feature, with an activation by global superstar Billie Eilish to celebrate the release of her new album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. I wasn’t expecting a marketing lesson during a hard rock concert, but here it was: “To all the aspiring musicians and artists in the room, I have one piece of advice: never miss a chance to connect with your fans.” The band, Adelitas Way, then introduced a song that had become a hit on TikTok. They went from overlooking this platform to using it effectively to connect with their new fans. It’s a good reminder of an essential principle in both music and business: meet your audience where they are to truly connect and grow audience loyalty. Your fans are on TikTok? Be on TikTok! Your fans are on Meta? Be on Meta! Your fans want to know your updates by email? Send them emails! When I think about the focus for the majority of the creatives I work with, it’s all about building community and a core audience. In the old music ecosystem (pre-digital) creatives wanted to grow an audience wide because it was about selling in high volume. Now that indie creatives have the ability to go direct to their audience it’s about having true and genuine relationships that are consistent and create opportunities to grow deep and create long term sustainability via a core audience and community.
