Ever been in a job interview that was going perfectly... until it wasn't? 😬 A good friend of mine was interviewing for a new fundraising role. The organization was a perfect fit—the mission, the values, everything. Then, during the final round, the CEO asks: "So, which donors are you bringing with you?" Ouch. My friend gave a thoughtful response: “I’ll build relationships with your existing donor base, find new connections that align with your mission.” But that wasn’t enough for the CEO. What they really wanted was a list of names and exact dollar amounts. A quick win. A guarantee. But here’s the thing: Donors aren’t chess pieces to be moved from one board to another. ♟️ Fundraising is about building authentic relationships based on shared values—not using donor connections as bargaining chips. That conversation? It sparked a deep dive into how we, as fundraisers, walk a fine line between ethical stewardship and relationship-building. 🚫 So how do you navigate the pressure to "bring donors with you" when you move to a new organization? 💡 How do you protect the integrity of your donor relationships *and* the mission you’re representing? In my latest episode of Let’s Talk Fundraising, we explore these tough questions and talk about setting boundaries that protect both the organization and the donor. If you’ve ever felt torn between short-term metrics and long-term relationships, this one’s for you. 🎧 Listen now on Apple Podcasts https://lnkd.in/gN9E59Xr 🎧 Listen now on Spotify https://lnkd.in/gQZZW4xC Let’s keep the conversation going—what would you have said to that CEO? 🤔

Real Talk 🚨 We're all on LinkedIn to help us grow and elevate our careers. But, many people don't know the art of a good "ask." "Ask" = Intro to a hiring manager, invite to be a guest on a podcast, etc. Art of a good "ask" note ✨ 1) Find a mutual connection, ideally a close one to you and the person you're asking to be connected with 2) Have a clear reason for your ask 3) Share 2-3 reasons "why" for the ask – Job to a hiring manager: share past work samples, skills you possess that are relevant for the role 4) Thank them for considering the request, and thank them again if they send the note ––– What's with the "thanking" steps at the end? An "ask" is you asking someone else to spend their social capital (meaning social trust + relationships) to help you. Make it easy for the person receiving your "ask" to help you by owning it and doing your homework (use LinkedIn, please 🙏).

Let's talk about #LifeSkills. A while ago I listened to a podcast episode where Jay Shetty was being interviewed. The interviewer posed this question and his answer struck and chord. There are countless skills and traits we all want to cultivate like patience, effective communication, teamwork, negotiation, time management, and critical thinking. The list is endless. But he highlighted and focused on this one. And I buy it. There are always going to be things we don't feel like doing and we're not in the mood to tackle. The dishes. That work task. That conversation. But guess what? We have to do them. There are some things there's just no getting around. And if we learn to push through resistance, lack of motivation, and everything else pulling us away from getting that thing done, we can do so much and get closer to our goals and aspirations. I especially love how this skill - doing something we don't feel like doing - can act as an umbrella skill above all others. Want to learn better time management skills but don't feel like it? Take that course anyway! Want to apply for that job but aren't in the mood to clean up your resume? Fire up your computer and polish that resume! What do you think of his choice to single out this skill? What skill comes to mind when you hear this question? Let's chat in the comments! PS. If I recalled the episode I would share the link of course, but unfortunately I don't. If anyone knows the one I'm referring to, please share in the comments!

Some advice does not lose value over time. I was going through old podcasts and came across this clip. Jen Allen-Knuth talks on advice she would give to the sales professional early in their career. I will not do the 2-min clip justice, but a short summary below. 1. Be Your Authentic Self - No trying to be the person in the movie closing deals and being all cool. Just be you and people will appreciate it WAY more. 2. Stand Out to Your Buyers - Use social media in a way that allows people to get to see you as you learn and tackle the day to day challenges. I asked Jen the question on what advice she would give a 22-yr old sales professional just starting out. Take out where you are in your career as this advice is great for any one of us. Her entire interview 30-min interview is full of these 90-second nuggets as the links are.....you know where they are. 😁 #sales #teamjen #thebirdsnest

If you’ve ever thought “If I can just have the chance to show my abilities, I know I’ll get an offer”, you need to know this… 👇 👇 👇 👉 You don’t need to wait until an interview to showcase your value. Here are 3 things you can do to prove your excellence right now (without an interview scheduled) 1️⃣ Survey the organization’s current employees and come up with a proposal based on what you learn. 2️⃣ Put together a portfolio of your projects that most closely fit the work you'd be doing at the company. 3️⃣ Record a Loom video of some research you’ve done on the company and how you think you can help. You can attach these to your application or send it to a contact at the company. Noah Kagan told Mark Manson this in a podcast that was posted last week: “Hiring is all about probability, what is the likelihood that you will succeed at this job?” He goes on to describe that the way that you increase your probability to 100% is to prove that you can do the job successfully. Action item for you: Don’t just brainstorm what you can do to showcase your value, put it in action. REPOST this if it was helpful!

Are you making this common job post error? You might think that casting a wide net is the best way to get candidates to apply for your opening. As a result, you make your job post as generic as possible. However, doing so can actually have the opposite reaction. Candidates want a job that they are going to love. A job that matches their needs, goals, and passions. Candidates want to feel excited about applying for a position. Why? Because while some candidates need a job due to relocation, finishing schooling, or a layoff, most candidates are looking for a job because they want something different and better than what they have. If they want something different than what they have, they are going to be picky about which jobs they submit their resume. If your job post doesn't connect with them, they won't apply. Stop writing to everyone and start writing as if you're speaking to your ideal candidate. It will make a big difference in your candidate pool! -------- What to learn more about the top goal of a job post? Listen to this week's podcast episode, Ep229 - How to Achieve a Job Post's Most Important Goal ------- Do you need a review of your job post to ensure it speaks to your ideal candidate?
