Ross and I had the pleasure of attending the Transport across the North APPG yesterday. It was great to hear about the strategic plan, meet those involved and learn more about all the great work which is being done across the region. Some of the things we noted were: • There was a real energy for improving transport in the North, the benefits this can provide and the collaboration that is already underway - it was infectious! • The expertise and passion is inspiring and the work being undertaken is truly market leading whether that is strategic planning, use of data and insights or the cross industry / modal collaboration. • There is some excellent practice and collaboration but to unlock the potential of the North, more still needs to be done. Whether that is aligning transport aspirations with energy supply strategy, moving from strategy to delivery or articulating the real benefits that investment in the North can provide in a business case. It was great to meet people and chat about the opportunities and challenges for transport in the North. It is certainly something we will be watching closely, attending future events (hopefully in the North, using exceptional transport options to get there) and would love to get involved with. It’s not often you can say you helped supercharge a region, unlock its economic potential and support its inhabitants is it? #transportforthenorth #baringa #transport #strategy #policy #planes #trains #automobiles

For 4 letters, the word 'free' can have such an amazing impact! Today when I got to the train station parking lot there was a sign at the barrier saying that parking was free. What a pleasant surprise! And by doing this they: - Put a huge smile on my face. - Made me feel like a valued customer. - Encouraged me to continue parking here (there is another lot across the street, so I do have a choice). I share this so that you consider sprinkling a bit of 'free' to your people from time to time. It may surprise you that the benefits can outweigh the costs! Please share what you do at your company in this way. #employeeengagement

How are you mixing things up with your commute? 🚴♂️🚌🌳 🚶♂️🚍 This morning, I ditched the car keys and embraced both active and public transport as I headed over to Cheltenham to catch up with Terry Malloy. Here’s how it went: 1. 🚶 Walking to/from the bus stop and venue (The Sober Parot to support The Nelson Trust) = instant cardio session, fresh air and natural light. 2. 🚌 £2 single on Stagecoach Bus = cheaper than a coffee and less stressful than fighting for parking spaces. (Also, no risk of encountering dodgy parking 🙈). 3. 🌍 Lowered my carbon footprint = one small step for me, one giant leap for the planet. 4. 💷 No petrol, no parking fees, no mileage claims = happy wallet for me and happy finance departments. Win-win! And the best part? I turned my bus journey into a mobile office; emails answered, meeting prepped. Can’t do that in a traffic jam! 🚦 I even had time to listen to a couple of my favourite podcasts (shoutout Goalhanger). So, fellow Gloucestershire folk: why not swap traffic jams for bus lanes? With Stagecoach West’s £2 single fares, it’s never been easier, or cheaper, to get around. #SustainableTravel #WorkplaceWellbeing #CommuterLife

Hubby and I went on one of our bike rides on Saturday. It was an unusually nice day for Melbourne! We often get to where we’re going via bike tracks, making it a much nicer ride. Occasionally the track takes us under a bridge, and despite there being more than enough room between my head and the bridge I always duck, afraid of banging my head … lol … But I think this is a common thing we humans do as our perspective gets a bit skewed - if only we could trust we have enough room in spite of what we feel or sense. I think our perception of our own voice is the same. We ‘sense’ we don’t have enough room in our higher range, so we ‘duck’. We feel our range is limited so we don’t venture anywhere beyond our low to mid areas. Did you know this can change and that you can add more to your speaking range? It does beg the question though - why would you want to? Well - imagine having access to greater expression and dynamic power when you speak. How do you think people would respond to you? I know that if I was able to totally trust I had enough room under the bridge I wouldn’t feel the need to duck. If you’d like to know how I could help you find your extra room book a complimentary chat, I would love to help: https://buff.ly/4erI6k0 #voicecoach #voicecoaching #voicetraining #vocalcoach #vocalcoaching #vocaltraining #raiseyourprofile #careergrowth #publicspeaking #publicspeakingtraining #publicspeakingcoach #publicspeakingskills #speakingskills

Imagine if suburban buses became a go-to service, where seamless, frequent, and connected rides weren’t just an option but a game-changer. This week on The Streets and People podcast, Wendy sits down with Jonathan English, a transport expert from NYU’s Marin Institute of Urban Management, to talk about how suburban bus services can be built to stick - really stick - with riders, instead of falling into the “empty bus, poor service” trap so common in North America, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Drawing from Toronto’s success story, Jonathan explains how setting up consistent and high-quality bus services from the very start made all the difference in newer suburban areas. It's about more than just buses arriving on time - it’s about creating a true alternative to cars. Jonathan's insights span Toronto to Zurich and car-dependent Espoo on the outskirts of Helsinki, offering a front-row view of how integration and frequency can transform buses from overlooked to essential. Wendy and Jonathan talk about what it takes to make these services thrive: cohesive networks, big-picture transport planning, and sound financial models that create a real foundation for growth. The conversation wraps with practical tips for local leaders, residents and anyone invested in improving suburban bus services. Because building bus networks that work - and that people want to use - takes a smart approach and a commitment to stick to it. Day 031-032 of my first 100 days journey of building TapOnn in Australia 🇦🇺 Sunday Founders Thought 📣 I was recently introduced to the "SMART" framework of working, and I am blown away by the results I've seen in just two weeks of implementing it. 💯 Let's break it down for better understanding: Specific 🫵: Make small, precise goals that are clear to everyone in the team. Measurable🔖: Ensure that each goal can be measured by its result. Attainable 🕛: Set realistic and achievable goals within a given time frame. Relevant✅: Align these short-term goals with your main objectives. Timely😎: Establish deadlines to efficiently measure results. I've implemented this framework for my personal goals and extended it to my entire team. We are now working on weekly SMART goals. Here are some key benefits we've realized within just a few weeks: 🚀Increased Team Involvement and Accountability: Everyone is more engaged and responsible for their work. ✅Clear Work Breakdown: Tasks are better defined, making it easier to understand and manage our workflow. 🌟Alignment with Future Goals: Small, actionable goals keep us focused and aligned with our long-term objectives. This approach has significantly enhanced our productivity and clarity. It's amazing how such a simple framework can bring about such profound changes! #100daysjourney #taponn #australia #networking #smart #instant #teamwork #productivityhacks #growth

🚦After a total of 15 years living in Germany, I had a eureka moment recently. Germany has traffic lights even on small rural intersections, rarely trusting drivers to make their own decisions about whether it is safe to proceed. Roundabouts, which are much more common in Britain, are more taxing for drivers, but research shows that they are generally safer, allow traffic to flow faster and are cheaper to maintain. 🛑 Consultant and entrepreneur Aaron Dignan argues that many organisations treat their employees like the German state treats its drivers, preferring systems of control and compliance that operate like traffic lights, rather than the trust and autonomy epitomised by a roundabout. 👮🏻♀That analogy made me realise why I still sometimes struggle with German culture even after living in the country for so long: I chafe against too many rules and regulations, preferring to find a pragmatic solution where possible: I want to be free to make my own decision about whether it is safe to cross the road, or how to organise a team. 💡 Frederic Laloux suggests some of the most forward-thinking companies and teams are trying to cultivate this kind of autonomy, moving beyond command-and-control hierarchies towards self-management, in a bid to make work more productive, fulfilling, and meaningful. ⏰ But not all employees want, or thrive in, organisations that grant them a large amount of freedom: many young people today say they would prefer a steady, secure 9-5 job, with the government for example, while they pursue their real passions outside of working hours.

This is how I would instantly improve people’s experiences with using the Rail system in the UK. There is usually a gap on most trains for bikes and buggies. On every other carriage take the last two seaters on each side out, make this the buggy and bike area and put two vending machines where the original gap was. One for hot drinks one for snack foods and breakfast bits. Charge everyone £1 per item. Card only. The theory is people are less likely to care that the 7:48 from Ashford to Kings Cross is delayed at a station when they can go and get a latte and a flapjack instantly. Regular commuters; thoughts? #commuting #businessidea #networkrail

Low Emissions Zones - i get the principals behind them, but can anyone give a straight answer questions to which the internet seems to veer away from? 1. My business is in an LEZ do my employee/contractors/visitors have to buy a compliance car? 2. If i live in an LEZ ... will i be allowed to drive my old car in/out of an LEZ to commute to non-LEZ workplace. 3. What if I or my employees cannot afford to buy a new car which is LEZ compliant and i cannot sell my house/flat?
