It’s my last day as CEO of The Health Lottery and time to reflect on what I’ve achieved since the company first came knocking on my door. I took over at a time when the company had been through an interim refresh, and it was my job to spearhead a complete rebrand in a short space of time. As an Atlantic rower, I’m unafraid to take on new challenges but I know all too well the dangers of focusing on the conclusion and not the means of getting there. You can’t leave La Gomera and think about your arrival in Antigua, 3000 miles away, without establishing what speed you need to go hour by hour, day by day and week by week. It was the same with relaunching The Health Lottery website. With a tight deadline, I had to focus my entire team on daily deliverables, while at the same time ensuring it was business as usual for our players. Just eight months later, in mid-August, we relaunched. Our new logo turned the existing one inside out, placing the heart at the centre. Our new strapline #playwithheart summed up our vision of feel-good fun: our customers get the chance to change their lives, and other people’s as well, with every £1 ticket they buy. We made The Health Lottery the umbrella brand, so consumers could better understand our game offering, renaming the main draw as The Big Win and creating new logos for Instant Win and Quick Win. Plus we improved our story-telling, so players around Great Britain could see where their money was being spent in their region, and how they were helping tackle health inequality and make our country a healthier place. Where business differs from a sporting challenge is that a rebrand is not the end but the beginning of a new era. Once I reached Antigua, I could kick back, have a beer and contemplate the scale of my achievement. (As well as learn how to walk again!) There’s no resting on your laurels when you are CEO. Instead, the team and I focused on the next big thing, our VIP Subscription product, which launched successfully at the beginning of February. These are simply the improvements which are obvious to the player. Behind the scenes, the focus has been on continually improving payment options and customer journeys, and bringing in fun new games for our players to enjoy. Now, having set The Health Lottery up for continued growth and success, I am moving on. I will be taking with me a brand new set of skills as well as my tried and tested journalistic abilities. Bring on the next adventure!
