Why have a Mental Health First Aider's in the workplace? In 2022/23, there were an estimated 875,000 workers suffering from anxiety, work-related stress and depression, this equates to 17.1 million working days being lost., costing between £42 - £45 billion annually! Traditional First Aiders provide immediate assistance for physical injuries. Mental Health First Aiders in the workplace are there to be a point of contact for an employee who is experiencing a either a mental health issue or emotional distress, giving initial support, encouragement and signposting a person to identify helpful measures they might need for recovery of their wellbeing. A big thank you to Tufcot for and MHFA England® #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #selfcare
At Tufcot, supporting mental health is a priority and, earlier this year, team members were invited to volunteer for Mental Health First Aid training. I’m excited to share that myself (Tracy Whitley) and David Nixon were selected to take part in this initiative, attending a course provided by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England. There were a number of key takeaways from the course including: ✔️ Understanding mental health ✔️ Mental health action plan ✔️ Crisis intervention ✔️ Practical skills ✔️ Statistics on mental health ✔️ Breaking the stigma ✔️ Resources and support ✔️ Personal growth Over two days, David and I gained valuable insights into recognising mental health challenges, offering initial support, and promoting well-being. We’d like to say a huge thanks to Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England for providing such a valuable course. Employers, it's not a bad idea for someone on staff to be Mental Health First Aid certified. Just like regular first-aid doesn't take the place of trained physicians and EMTs, MHFA doesn't replace mental health providers. However, everyone can provide immediate first aid until help arrives with a little training. (A link about the efficacy of MHFA is in the comments! and here's the free course from UNH!) https://lnkd.in/eTiahywm
