If you know New York City, you know there’s one thing about it that always stays the same - it is constantly changing. Old buildings come down and new ones climb out of holes in the ground. Waves of people come and go, even the ways we get around expand and contract. But through all this transformation, Mister Softee’s jingle somehow permanently marks the start of summer and a Nathan’s hot dog in Coney Island is only ever a subway ride away. Superbien hasn’t just called New York home for 5 years, we called Tom Scalabre captain of our ship till summer 2023. And since then, just like this miraculous place, Superbien New York has sailed into a new era of its own - informed by the past but reimagined for the future. We continue to embody the ingenuity and savvy that are central to the Superbien DNA but we are developing and expanding upon the practices that Superbien always upholds. In Toronto's real estate market, the collective action problem looms large, casting a shadow over both growth and affordability. This issue divides stakeholders into two camps: those advocating for progress and those waving the NIMBY banner—“Not In My Backyard.” The result? Multiple projects in Toronto face frustrating delays in the approvals process, putting the brakes on our city's growth and economic potential. It's clear: Toronto needs to ramp up efforts to upzone and unlock new possibilities for development. Reflecting on the past, I can't help but think of the excitement surrounding Sidewalk Labs a few years ago. Their ambitious plans for the Port Lands sparked imaginations and promised innovative solutions for affordability and sustainability. Fast forward to today, and we're left with a void—despite the grand ambitions, visionary concepts, and promises of a brighter future. The deal fell through, and we're left wondering: was this a missed opportunity? The truth is, Toronto is hungry for projects that embody boldness and ambition. We need initiatives that push boundaries, challenge the status quo, and set a new standard for what's possible in urban development. Bulldoze the Olympic stadium yes, but a taxpayer bail out for Just for Laughs? I don’t think so. I wil repeat that the so-called CAQ business duo of Premier Legault and Finance Minister Girard stopped being businessmen since entering politics. Far too many of their public policy choices are driven by a concern for political optics that eclipse basic business sense. If the Olympic stadium was owned and operated by a private company managed by a board of directors answerable to its shareholders to whom the board is duty bound to maximize shareholder value, does anyone honestly believe that the board would commit one billion dollars to repair the roof on 50 year old outdated event venue with horrible acoustics? Clearly, the preferred path of a forward looking board of directors would be to demolish this money pit and replace it with a state of the art event venue- one that could also architecturally enhance the Montreal skyline- instead of holding on to this status quo structure that is little more than a monument to political ineptitude. But these two former businessmen have chosen to do what no business executives would do- throw good money after bad. With respect for the opinion to the contrary, as much as we may love the Just for Laughs Festival it does not merit a taxpayer bailout. This festival has filed for bankruptcy - the textbook definition of business failure. Meaning that the business model pursued by JFL generated expenses that exceeded revenues leaving it with a balance sheet of liabilities far exceeding assets. JFL had professional equity holders with deep pockets and it still failed. The « economic spin off benefits » is the go to argument used by businesses looking for access to pubic funds when their businesses fail or cannot launch without government financial aid. The "spin off" argument cannot be credibly quantified. The refusal to partially fund the building of a major league baseball stadium in Montreal has rightly rejected the spin off argument. Insisting that a business support itself with a viable product or service and a solid business model makes perfect business sense. Marginal assistance or peripheral support from the government may be justified at some policy level - but government should not become a business partner. The function of government is to respond to the public interest by delivering primary health, education and social services and engaging in economic policies that create more wealth for everyone- not handing out hard earned tax dollars to help failed businesses get back on their feet. If Just for Laugh has a viable product, business reorganizations happen all of the time. A new investor may take JFL over and resurrect it. If the private market does not make this happen- what does that tell us? We need a government that can develop and pursue smarter economic policy. Because the CAQ « business plan » makes no sense.

Going to the moon ... 🚀 🌑 Thanks to the team at Experience UK in collaboration with the Department for Business and Trade for putting together a great programme for the Experience on Main Street event this week in London. Great keynote from Nick Searl from Related Argent presenting the wonderful redevelopment at Kings Cross. This really is a place to live, work and enjoy - take note of this special place world. Turning events/activations into traditions resonated. And the pop-up chess culture speaks for itself 👌 Wonderful experience back at the Lightroom, having visited previously to see the #DavidHockney show. I have to say, Moonwalker narrated by Tom Hanks was something else ... out of this world 🌍. Nice one Richard Slaney. Leaving the conference I reflected on where opportunities are, as I often find myself doing. Here's what I wrote ... "More connected storytelling across schemes, more focus on soil specific and cultural storytelling, more community building experiences. There are under utilised spaces where great anchor IP entertainment could fit nicely, perhaps, we just need to zoom out and re-imagine the entertainment strategically and red-thread great spaces, streets, centres together. Work harder at making them not just 'space' but destinations where you want to live, eat, work AND #play together - be a place you don't want to leave, and if you do, you look forward to going back asap." It's what we do at Storyland Studios and across the #themedentertainment industry ... 😏 We should probably talk a bit more #realestate, #localauthority, #townplanner and #landlord folks, right? ☎

Todays thought is about vision. Why? Some of you know, that I am posting from "the concrete jungle where dreams are made of". Being here in New York shows me the impressive power of a shared dream to build something great. Visions shall be clear, concise and a base for a following strategy. That's what we learn. Really? Was it clear to build a City on Manhattan Island becoming the symbol of turnings dreams into reality? Or was it the wish/longing/need to improve life, combined with shared success stories of people who made it, which founded the city of dreams image. My dear POs, it is hard to find the find the balance, but 1. try to enrich your vision with a dream, where your team can relate to. 2. awake a longing in your team, (a shared dream) 3. relate it you customer need (product). Once all three dream-based visions (customer, team, PO) match, the dragon gets released. :-)

As much as I am attracted to smaller and regional cities, the reality is that our large cities are where creativity (and more importantly applied creativity – innovation) occur, because critical mass and larger-scale proximity encourage experimentation and interaction and new ideas. Just up the road from where I live, the city of Sydney, the largest city in Australia (for the moment, anyway), is grappling with the loss of creative talent and the creative economy which has driven much of the excitement and liveability of the city for decades.   On 12 June, from 6:30pm–8:30pm at Centennial Hall, Sydney Town Hall, a massive line-up of Australian and global speakers – prominent artists, strategists and political decision-makers will discuss what to do about it, to help kick start strategies to turn the situation around. The organisers lay out the importance of the issue, ‘culture and creativity are the soul of our cities and communities - they create a sense of belonging, revitalise neighbourhoods, build communities, drive innovation and contribute to local and city centre economies.’ They clearly identify the problem looking for solutions – and it’s a problem many larger global cities increasingly face ‘While Sydney is a powerhouse of culture for the nation, what makes that possible is at risk. Our creative workforce increasingly can’t afford to live or work in Sydney. This shortfall has been especially pronounced in Times Square, hitting Broadway theaters particularly hard. Indeed, as of September, Broadway ticket sales to individuals living in New Jersey, Westchester, and other suburban areas were still down 15 to 20 percent from 2019 levels. This forum will delve into the factors that have contributed to the slow recovery of regional visitors to Broadway, from the persistence of hybrid work and safety concerns to excessive traffic along Eighth Avenue to a pedestrian environment and streetscape with plenty of room for reinvention.
