In their new Forefront article, Yarden S. Fraiman, DeWayne M. Pursley, Megan Sandel, Blair W. Weikel, Michelle A. Williams, and Sunah S. Hwang from Harvard Medical School, Boston Medical Center (BMC), and University of Colorado School of Medicine discuss how Personal Conflict of Interest disclosure offers a promising approach whereby authors acknowledge their own personal identities to promote transparency and accountability through systemic policy change. "All research is dependent on human choices and experiences; researchers select their question of interest, data collection approaches and tools, conceptual frameworks, study recruitment approaches, study sites, and the characteristics of study subjects eligible to participate in studies. Even the variables and factors that researchers include in their models can have monumental effects on the scientific findings and conclusions." Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/4eCLmIW

Failure. Resilience. Hope. Success. Great story.
On Monday, renowned neurosurgeon Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa captivated a sold-out crowd with stories of resilience from his inspiring life as part of the Janelia Research Campus' Dialogues public discussion series. “As I’ve gotten older and I hear talks about philosophy, I realize that in life, success will give you that kind of confidence that you need and failure will allow you to build that kind of character that you need, but wisdom comes from the balance of the two of them,” Quiñones-Hinojosa said. Concussions and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are more common than many realise - in the US, nearly three million people are officially diagnosed with a TBI each year. 🧠 Left untreated, these injuries can lead to long-term problems. Scientific American explores the impact of TBIs and the importance of early detection in a recent article, featuring insights from Professor David Sharp, a neurologist and Centre Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute at Imperial College London. Professor Sharp’s work focuses on harnessing #neurotechnology development to improve the lives of those living with dementia and the effects of brain injury. Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/eWDRMu49

“Women's Ideas in the History of Medicine” Free webinar organized by the Centre for the Study of Medicine and the Body in the Renaissance: Giulia Guidara 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐥: 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧’𝐬 "𝐂𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐞𝐭 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐞" 𝟖 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 – 𝟒.𝟑𝟎 𝐏𝐌 (𝐂𝐄𝐒𝐓) The "Cause et cure" of Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) is both a cosmological text and a medical handbook. This double aspect, so to speak, of the work is not surprising: in medieval Europe, human beings and nature are deeply interconnected. As the title "Cause et cure" suggests, most of the work focuses on the causes and natural treatment of several diseases. Hildegard’s idea of disease is very different from the present one: sickness always derives from a physiological change in the body. The reference framework is the humoral theory, according to which the four humours, or bodily fluids, (i.e. blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile) affect temperament, physical qualities and health. However, some diseases described in the "Cause et cure" mainly affect mood and behaviour and, in this regard, they can be assimilated into the modern concept of mental disorders. My lecture will analyse the passages of "Cause et cure" devoted to diseases that affect mood and behaviour, with a special focus on their causes and their possible treatment. This allows us to highlight both Hildegard’s ideas on the relationship between soul and body, and the medieval concept of mental illness.
