🚀 Welcome back to the Keyless Explainer Series! 🚀 Last post, we explained the basics of biometric authentication. Today, we’ll be explaining the two biometric systems. There are two primary ways to authenticate users with biometrics: local and server-side authentication. In local biometric authentication, such as with Face ID or passkeys, both enrollment and authentication occur directly on the device. For example, users initially show their face when setting up a new phone and then present the same biometric data each time they unlock it. The entire process happens on the device itself. In this scenario the device authenticates the user. In server-side biometric authentication, the biometric sample is captured on the device but is sent to a remote server for storage. Each time the user authenticates, a new sample is sent to the server, which matches it with the stored sample.
