Accurate and transparent measurement of greenhouse gas emissions is critical for tracking progress toward climate goals. Join KAPSARC and Kayrros at a #COP29 side event to explore results from our latest study on using novel satellite technology for enhanced methane measurements in the Gulf. 🌍 Methane emissions must come down—and fast. The UN Environment Programme Programme and International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO report, “An Eye on Methane: Invisible, but Not Unseen,” released during #COP29, highlights methane’s critical role as a potent greenhouse gas. While Mars issued 1,200 alerts for major emissions, only 1% prompted action. 🔑 Success Stories: Simple repairs in Algeria and Nigeria avoided emissions equal to one million cars annually, showcasing the potential for swift, impactful climate action. The tools and data are ready—it’s time for governments and industries to act, reducing methane emissions 40-45% by 2030 to meet the Global Methane Pledge goals. #MethaneAction #ClimateChange #COP29
Methane emissions must come down, and come down fast. Released during the ongoing #COP29, UN Environment Programme and International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO’s new “An Eye on Methane Report: Invisible, but not unseen” takes stock of progress in harnessing a data revolution that can #CutMethane on a global scale. The report shows methane plume alerts represent an untapped opportunity for immediate climate action. The tools are ready, the targets are set – now it is time to act. Rapid action to #CutMethane emissions is one of the most important short-term climate actions we can take to immediately slow warming. 🟢 Proven technologies and practices could reduce emissions from the major sectors like fossil fuel, waste and agriculture by as much as 45% by 2030. 🛰️ Most of these technical solutions can be implemented at little or no cost, especially in the fossil fuel sector. ➡️ UN Environment Programme's International Methane Emissions Observatory plays a key role in helping bridge critical gaps in data to foster transparency and enable action through science-based solutions. Sobering reading. It is imperative that we move swiftly to transition to renewable energy. We are running out of time! The State of the Climate 2024 report has been released by CSIRO in partnership with the Bureau of Meteorology, has found Australia has already warmed by 1.51 degrees, with more extreme heat events over land and oceans, longer fire seasons, more intense heavy rainfall and sea level rise. The severity of impacts on Australians and our environment will depend on the speed at which global greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced. The changes in the weather and climate are happening at an increasing pace. Australia must plan for, and adapt to, the changing nature of climate risk now and in the decades ahead. #climatechange #renewableenergy #gippslandnewenergy https://lnkd.in/gb_NG9f9

Greenhouse gas levels in our earth's atmosphere is 2.5 times greater than it has been for at least 800,000 years! On March 4, 2024, MethaneSAT (a satellite developed by an environmental non-profit) was launched to monitor and study global methane emissions in order to combat climate change. https://lnkd.in/g66B3kCB This article further talks about how data and AI can be applied to map, measure and trace methane sources across the globe! https://lnkd.in/gma28VTT!

Why do we aim for #netzero? July 2023 marked the hottest month ever globally, according to data from Copernicus, the EU's climate change monitoring service. 🌡️🐻❄️ Calculations indicate it hasn't been this warm in 120,000 years. Our climate strategy is deliberately ambitious. We have set a clear target for 2040: GEA will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero at every link in the value chain. Drawdown can be achieved by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, implementing carbon capture and storage, or lowering atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations through technologies such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). Achieving drawdown is an important goal in the fight against climate change.
