🟢 The Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) sets the global standard for methane accountability and transparency in the #OilAndGas sector. ➡️ Through it, companies are empowered to ensure their commitments to #CutMethane are matched by credible data. 🆕 IMEO's latest "An Eye on #Methane" report highlights that it has expanded to 140+ members covering 42% of global production in 2024. This marks an increase of over 20 companies since it was last reported in 2023. Critically, the latest data from OGMP 2.0 companies shows that the framework’s efforts to translate the sector to credible, measurement-based emissions reporting are delivering results. Fully a quarter of global oil and gas production is now covered by OGMP 2.0’s highest reporting standards. Expanding this progress is needed to enable action and track progress on methane across the entire sector. Rapid action to #CutMethane emissions is one of the most important short-term climate actions we can take to immediately slow warming. 🟢 Proven technologies and practices could reduce emissions from the major sectors like fossil fuel, waste and agriculture by as much as 45% by 2030. 🛰️ Most of these technical solutions can be implemented at little or no cost, especially in the fossil fuel sector. ➡️ UN Environment Programme's International Methane Emissions Observatory plays a key role in helping bridge critical gaps in data to foster transparency and enable action through science-based solutions. At #COP28 much of the oil and gas industry committed to #CutMethane. Big news for #methane transparency in #Africa as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) joins UN Environment Programme’s flagship Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 NOCs like NNPC Limited represent a significant #MethaneMitigation opportunity. Collectively, they account for half of today’s #OilAndGas production and two-thirds of proven reserves. NOC leadership is essential to deliver on the world’s methane goals and NNPC Limited joins a growing community of NOCs joining the Partnership to translate ambition into action. OGMP 2.0 provides a powerful framework for companies to scale accountability and transparency, and currently covers 42% of global Oil and Gas production. Pleased to have participated in the ‘New Developments of the GOSAT Series’ seminar organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan, National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), and JAMSTEC: Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology during #COP29. 🤝 Events like these emphasize the importance of international collaboration in utilizing satellite #data for science, policy, and business to advance global decarbonization efforts and #CutMethane. UN Environment Programme is pleased to see growing interest in satellite-derived methane data and looks forward to continued collaboration with stakeholders to promote actions that can drive meaningful climate solutions. UNEP’s IMEO looks forward to integrating data from the new GOSAT-GW. ℹ️ The Global Observing Satellite for Greenhouse gases and Water cycle (GOSAT-GW) is a Japanese Earth observation #satellite. It is the third satellite in the GOSAT Series for observations of greenhouse gases such as #CO2 and #methane from space. GOSAT-GW is scheduled to be launched in Japan's fiscal year 2024.
