Will the world be freed of racism? Is there a way that capital markets can help to end or reduce racism?
It appears that peace for some is achieved by undermining others. Racism persists in various fields, with endemic instances found in Spain, as seen with Vinicious Jr experiencing endless racist chants last season.
In work environments, inherent racism often targets people of color. Disparities in salaries, hiring criteria, and candidate shortlisting highlight the pervasive nature of these issues.
Argentina's recent actions post their Copa America wins are deplorable. The racism chants directed at France, especially aimed at players of color, call for condemnation from everyone.
We hear all over the world of effort to try and reduce racial abuses in areas like sport and workplace. Some companies have racism codes while Spain and other countries are giving custodial sentences to those that are found guilty on racism. Inspite of all these efforts, racism is on the rise, begging the question on what could be the effective tool to reducing this scourge.
Can capital markets be an effective communication tool? Pondering. I am of the view that investors' perception play a major role in driving the capital markets. When investors embraced the ESG issue, not so long ago, we started to see capital markets reacting. Should institutions like Morningstar Sustainalytics Corporate Solutions that provide ESG rating data be tasked with scoring racism separately as they do ESG?
