Gift distribution post: GIFTS DELIVERED! Following up on the gift-wrapping event last week, AGUA Gifting Smiles and The ImpactreeLivelihood Foundation distributed those 600+ gifts on Sunday to children with special needs as well as in rural areas across Chennai and Tuticorin. Keeping in line with AGUA’s vision, our volunteers, as well as budding women entrepreneurs of Impactree’s NETRI project, were able to spread positivity and kindness to the children, allowing them to enter the new year with smiles on their faces. This experience was both delightful and empowering, and we at Impactree are proud to be a part of it. Today, AGUA Gifting Smiles and Impactree Livelihood Foundation joined forces to help children with special needs as well as in rural areas by wrapping 600+ gifts. These gifts are set to be donated next week on December 22nd across Chennai and Thoothukudi, with the aim of putting a smile on their faces just before New Years. This event is more than just giving toys: it’s about spreading positivity and kindness for a better tomorrow, and we at Impactree couldn’t be more thankful to be a small part of it. Our sincerest thanks to Subha Pandian for her visionary leadership in organizing this event, Danesh Kanagaraj, founder of the Aclude Foundation, WomenUp, and our dedicated volunteers whose selfless efforts pushed this event into the success it became. The recent COP29 Azerbaijan conference, held by the UNFCCC, concluded with a significant pledge of $300 billion annually to developing nations. While this seems significant, a similar amount was spent last year on climate disaster relief globally. The deal was made at the last minute, leaving developing nations unable to properly voice their concerns. The Indian representative openly expressed disappointment afterwards, on both the final deal and the lack of inclusivity during the event. A central focus of COP29 Azerbaijan was addressing climate change, and this lack of care can worsen the situation by delaying the implementation of sustainable initiatives. But with every setback comes the opportunity to learn and improve. At Impactree, we believe the best way to avoid any further delays is to evolve our approach to ESG and sustainability: from reporting to tools for effective management.   What are your thoughts on the COP29 conference? BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY: 40 YEARS LATER At one point, Union Carbide was a manufacturing giant, and its Bhopal pesticide plant was critical in developing the surrounding region. That all changed in December 1984, when toxic gas leaked out, causing 3787 confirmed deaths, and left 558,125 others with varying levels of disability. The fallout left 75% of Bhopal’s residents unable to work, pushing them further down the poverty line, and many children born afterwards either stillborn, or with severe birth defects. Union Carbide’s stock value plummeted by $6million and never recovered, eventually being bought out. In response, the Government of India passed the Environmental Protection Act in 1986 to address Health & Safety (H&S) in high-risk workplaces. From our experience when talking about sustainability, H&S is often pushed aside in favour of the environmental aspects. The Bhopal Gas Tragedy is a living reminder of that mistake. The long term impact of these incidents are not only limited to the loss of life, but also to the economic loss faced by the community. The Bhopal Gas tragedy is an example of failures in multiple ESG pillars having a serious impact on communities and businesses. At Impactree, we recognise the role ESG has in preventing such incidents, which led us to build upon standard ESG metrics to integrate global safety standards as leading risk indicators. These indicators include PPE effectiveness, workforce training, and risk assessments, all to create safer living for all. Following up on our previous post(https://lnkd.in/gjpHUzfe), for everyone who says that #ESG and #Sustainability is going to stop mattering because of the upcoming global policies: ●      Research indicates 60% of #investors say ESG investing has yielded them higher returns compared to non-ESG ones. ●      2024 was the first year to surpass the 1.5oC mark set by the Paris Agreement, and though there’s no clear estimate, the costs are said to be astronomical So, while ESG may not die out, it needs to evolve in order to have the desired impact. Is it the end of ESG? With global political change on the horizon following the hashtag #2024USElection, there is a lot of talk about the ESG bubble bursting. At Impactree we have always been steadfast in the fact that hashtag #ESG cannot be a feel-good trend; it needs to make business sense to last. From the beginning, we have been clear that ESG and hashtag #Sustainability frameworks are good ways for organizations to track their non-financial metrics better. And if they are properly aligned it can reduce costs in the short run and increase profits in the long term. We believe the global administration change presents an opportunity for the South Asian economies to come together and bring forth this perspective of ESG. ESG isn’t only environment, social and governance: it’s a way of operation which many South Asian companies have operated for years keeping in mind resources, communities and profits. 4 positive trends with global administrative changes we foresee will be a) Reducing legal friction – Legal compliances and interoperability across countries have always been challenging for business. With the change in government in America we feel the focus on ease of business will increase collaboration and growth. b) Investments in localization – The new government has been vocal about localization, and this will have negative effects on migration and displacement. Boosting local manufacturing and investments is one way of recovering from multiple stresses in supply chains first due to COVID, then from wars. c) Supply chain optimization - Investing in the optimization of supply chains will drive transparency and accountability across the value chain where sustainability frameworks can play a large role in unpacking crucial data to help gather meaningful insights. d) Reduction in GHG emissions – When we work with companies to reduce GHG emissions, tracking their current inventory is a first step. Over a period, companies take specific initiatives to reduce GHG contributor metrics in terms of cost savings or capturing mechanisms. Supply chain optimization and localization of certain processes could reduce long-term GHG emissions. With this we see that ESG could transform into playing the role of optimization, risk mitigation and performance improvement it was meant to. It's neither the end nor the beginning, we are right where it will now start to get interesting.
