This is important work. I also want to draw attention to this section from the RANZCP position statement on potential perpetrators, as it is important context for some of the figures provided. "The limited available data, such as reports to the Mental Health Complaints Commissioner in Victoria, found alleged perpetrators were most often other consumers with fewer reports for staff and visitors.[5, 8] However, this data is likely to reflect both the inevitable underreporting of sexual harm incidents and then further likelihood of underreporting of incidents that involve staff.[31] This is due to the power mbalance and vulnerability experienced by those admitted to mental health inpatient wards, which is exacerbated for particularly vulnerable groups such as women, people with disabilities, members of the LGBTIQ+/irawhiti takatāpui community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Māori.[7]"

If you know me you definitely know I have a passion for mental health advocacy. I am therefore elated to share that a year ago I obtained a certification in Quality Rights: Mental Health, Recovery and Community Inclusion, which is an initiative by the World Health Organization . This initiative deepened my understanding of how to advance the rights and quality of care in the mental health sector and other related fields, such as Sexual and Reproductive Health, which I advoacte for. Mental health is, without a doubt, all round. The training equipped me with skills in; ✔️ Promoting human rights-based approaches in mental health services. ✔️Addressing stigma, discrimination, and inequality . ✔️ Supporting inclusive policies for people with mental health conditions or disabilities. This certification is a plus for me in my journey to ensuring equitable, high quality and respectful care for everyone, without discrimination. Every chronically ill/disabled person is likely all too aware of the fact that May seems to be Everything Awareness Month. ME, Fibromyalgia, Deaf Awareness, EDS, Mental Health, Lupus, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, to name a few. This onslaught of awareness can be absolutely exhausting. So often, the constant advocacy and awareness can feel like yelling into an echo chamber. It rarely feels like the awareness breaks out into the non-disabled population, the people who need to hear it most. Whilst the solidarity of sharing experiences among other disabled people is also needed, what is awareness if it never seeps out into action from non-impacted communities? We still need awareness, we really do, but we also need action and people in power to listen. So, if raising awareness feels like too much to engage with in your state of hyperawareness, that’s okay. Step away and protect your peace.
