The Experience Gap in Surveying: Why Negotiation is Key The surveying field presents a fascinating paradox. We've all observed it: highly experienced surveyors, the ones with proven track records, sometimes don't secure the best opportunities in terms of position or salary. Meanwhile, less experienced surveyors might land those high-paying roles. Here's how this dynamic might play out in the surveying profession: Stagnation vs. Market Awareness: Years of experience can breed comfort in a current role. Seasoned surveyors might be hesitant to pursue better opportunities, missing out on potentially higher salaries. Undervaluing Expertise: Surveyors with a wealth of knowledge might not effectively communicate their value. They could downplay their ability to handle complex projects, manage teams, or adapt to new technologies, leading to lower compensation offers. The Evolving Landscape: Surveying techniques and industry demands are constantly in flux. Experienced surveyors might not be actively tracking these shifts, putting them at a disadvantage during negotiations for cutting-edge roles. So, how can experienced surveyors bridge this experience gap? Sharpen Your Negotiation Skills: Invest in negotiation training or resources specific to the surveying industry. Highlighting the cost savings and efficiency you bring through your experience can be very persuasive. Quantify Your Value: Document your accomplishments! Track the number of successful projects you've managed, the size of budgets you've handled, or the innovations you've implemented. Use these metrics to demonstrate the value you bring to a company. Stay Current with Industry Trends: Actively participate in surveying conferences, workshops, or online communities. Network with colleagues and stay updated on the latest technologies and surveying practices. By amplifying your expertise and honing your negotiation skills, you, the experienced surveyor, can secure the recognition and rewards you deserve. Let's discuss! Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. #surveying #careeradvice #salarynegotiation #experiencedsurveyor #surveyorlife

Chartered Building Surveyors: Can you see the step through to Senior, Associate or beyond? If you can’t, you may well feel restricted and undervalued. I recently spoke with a Senior Building Surveyor facing these challenges. Hindered by a top-heavy company structure, he found no opportunity for progression despite delivering Associate-level work for the past 12 months. Client relationships that he had built were winning company projects, yet he received no recognition or benefits. The Directors took on the more interesting projects, leaving him with basic tasks. Additionally, he was barred from building a team beneath him, limiting growth. Recognising the need for change, I connected him with an ideal solution. He secured a step up to Associate with a substantial pay increase and a structured progress plan outlining specific criteria for advancement. This plan liberated him from the constraints of the company's hierarchy, allowing him to proactively work towards his next promotion. An over-target billing bonus ensured direct financial benefits from his client relationships. After three months in his new role, he was noticeably happier, with recognised value, proactive career advancement, and financial rewards from client connections. So, if you want to remove those restrictions, have your value recognised and truly benefit from the work and connections you create, just send me a DM and we can take it from there. roger@hdsurveyors.com 07769551846

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗝 𝗖𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝘆’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 26 JUN 2024 BY GREG PITCHER J Coffey has reported substantial increases in profit and turnover in its latest full-year accounts. The Middlesex-based contractor saw its revenue rise by 26 per cent to £215.7m in the 12 months to 30 September 2023. Pre-tax profit increased by 40 per cent to £6.4m for the same period. J Coffey said it had secured a “large overseas project” that boosted its revenue last year. The firm’s “core business turnover” had “remained stable” it added. Directors said the rising cost of labour and materials led to “some projects delivering a lower-than-expected margin”. But the firm’s order book and work pipeline “remain strong” they added. “To ensure the business has a diversified and secure revenue generation, over the past year we have prioritised the growth of the infrastructure, data centre and structural alterations elements,” said the directors. “While we continue to trade on our time-honoured values, we are also very aware of the importance of investment in innovative technologies, recurrent training and development of our people, and innovative approach to our construction techniques.” J Coffey’s UK and Ireland revenue rose by almost a third last year to £189.0m. Its European turnover plummeted by 92 per cent to £2.1m but income from the rest of the world soared from under £1m in 2022 to £24.6m in the latest period. Despite the growth in revenue and profit, the company’s average headcount dropped from 282 to 262 last year. Nonetheless employee expenses rose by almost a quarter to £36.1m. The contractor had £13.2m of net current assets in September 2023, up from £9.8m a year earlier. Surveyors: Broad experience is your best asset. If you don’t have it now, then you need to read this. Here’s why: Whether markets are good or bad, the most valued Surveyor is always a “well rounded” Surveyor. Whenever consultancies approach me for help, they’re always looking for “well-rounded surveyors with broad experience across projects and professional instructions”. And you won’t be surprised to read that this is also how they describe their most valued employees. However, if you don’t fit that description right now, don’t despair, we’re in a rare market that can give you options to get this sought-after experience, but you do need to act now. I’ll explain: We have a skills shortage in Surveying which is opening doors to motivated and skilled Surveyors who want to broaden their experience. Consultancies are more flexible than ever, and your skills in one area can supplement the training that will be required to develop your experience in other areas. Becoming a well-rounded Surveyor comes with many benefits, not least: - ✔ Better pay ✔ First in line for progression ✔ More attractive to future employers ✔ Reduced risk of being made redundant However, if you want to broaden your experience you first have to get your foot in the door – and that’s not always easy. Your best option is to take a strategic approach with the support of a knowledgeable professional. This is why working with the right recruiter to fully explore your background and uncover all areas of your experience is essential. I’ve been guiding people through this process for over 20 years. And when we work together, I’ll help you to tailor your CV to ensure that it fully demonstrates the areas in which you can be an asset to a new employer. Then, I’ll guide potential employers, show them the value you can deliver right now, and also demonstrate your motivation and your ambition to broaden your experience. So, if you want to elevate your experience, increase your value to any employer and earn more money, contact me and we can discuss your needs. No CV needed.
