I just gave my entire team Christmas week off. Not an "official policy." Not in the employee handbook. Just an unwritten tradition I've kept for 5 years straight. Why? Because time with family is priceless. This extra week off comes on top of regular vacation time. No strings attached. Complete disconnection. Some business owners might think: "But what if clients need us?" "What about year-end deadlines?" "Won't this hurt the business?" Here's my response: When hell freezes over... or when it snows in Tampa, Florida. (Spoiler: I'm in Tampa. It's not going to snow.) Could something catastrophic happen that requires all hands on deck? Sure. But I've learned something in 5 years of doing this: The world keeps spinning. Clients understand. Work gets done. Most importantly? My team knows they're valued as humans first, employees second. That's worth more than any "official policy" could ever be. Happy Christmas everyone.

Client: "I have a wild idea for April Fool's Day. What if we tell all our employees they're getting a month-long vacation?" Recruiter: "Haha, that would definitely be a surprise! But let's stick to something more realistic. How about organizing a team-building activity instead?" Client: "True, we don't want to cause chaos! Let's go with the team-building, but we can still throw in some fun pranks along the way, right?" Recruiter: "Absolutely! A little laughter never hurts, as long as it's all in good fun." #AprilFoolsHumor

I do cherish time off for family vacations, especially in the summer at our favorite spot in northern Michigan. Any guesses on where we are standing in this picture? In addition to time off, there are other incentives that can be powerful tools to show employees they are valued and appreciated. As we enter into the back half of 2024, start thinking about how you can reward team members for their outstanding contributions. #One10 is here to help guide you and recommend a solution that is meaningful and relevant to your organization. #rewards #employeeappreciation #holidaygifting

August is the time for people to go on vacation, and I never fail to not be surprised, but instead I am disappointed, at the amount of people who say "I'm on vacation this week, but I'm checking e-mail and available by phone if you need me." That used to be me, and people would take me up on this offer every time, so I never really got a vacation. If you're scheduled to be out of office, then be out of office. If you're constantly checking in, it shows (a) how little faith you have in the people covering for you and (b) that if your role is so singularly important that you have to be "on" 365 days a year, then that's poor planning on the organization. How to solve this problem: (a) Your OOO note says that you're away and won't be online (b) Your OOO note says who can cover for you in whatever situation (c) Your organization has defined backups for every employee (d) Your calendar/projects are published on a collaborative space for everyone to see, so that if something really needs to happen on something you're working on, then the team is aware and can act on it You don't win awards for fewest vacation days taken per year. And your organization likely won't remember this self-sacrifice when you need it most (i.e., layoffs, restructuring)

I recently came across a conversation where people leaders were talking about how frequent vacation time-offs can cause employees to lose focus. I respectfully disagree and here is my spicy take on it. Do read it if you get a chance and let me know your thoughts. :) https://lnkd.in/gaBi9FMA #employeeexperience #employeeengagement #userexperience #empathy #leadershipdevelopment
