Here is a round-up of the latest AI news, as per The Information: 1. OpenAI has successfully closed its latest fundraising episode, netting more than $6 billion and valuing the entire company at around $150 billion (double compared to a year ago). While Microsoft continues to be the biggest investor, the new funding is demonstrating that OpenAI is maturing as a company. 2. More and more people are using LLMs instead of traditional search, with OpenAI working on SearchGPT and Perplexity striving to become an alternative to Google. That's not necessarily good news, considering that an LLM search consumes 10x more energy than traditional search, and for sure Google is not going to like it. Yes, they do offer an integration of AI, but given their embarrassing track record, it's not an easy sell. 3. Sam Altman and Jony Ive are partnering to launch a revolutionary AI device which will "create a computing experience that is less socially disruptive than the iPhone," with the latter investing over $60 million in acquiring a building next to his existing office. Their intention is to raise $1 billion in funding, and Steve Jobs's widow, Laurene Powell Jobs, is expected to contribute a large amount.

OpenAI have released (to a very small set of testers) SearchGPT. From the video it looks to be a very capable search agent, and well beyond the much maligned Google effort to integrate search and AI. That said, OpenAI have been doing a fair amount of announcing, but not much in terms of releasing new features. (The new Voice mode being just one example). So as to when we see this remains to be seen. If popular, it will of course be emulated, and it'll be interesting to see how it intersects with the SEO industry. Safety, and censorship are also considerations. AI powered search engines, may become precarious, as the definition of safe, could be construed as 'completely risk averse for anything that could conceivably be unsafe' which may result in an AI curated internet. It also remains to be seen, that if all search platforms become AI driven, just how much power that would consume. https://lnkd.in/efnF8vZd #AI #energy #openai #datacenters #search #Google #datacenters
