I totally resonate with this frame of thinking to support decision making, both in one's personal and professional life, wearing the strategist hat: how do we prioritize what to focus on, do we only look at the upside potential? What are the trade-offs to consider and what do these mean? How big are the costs of pursuing a specific direction or opportunity and are they really worthy? What are we giving up and what is the implication of that? Are we creating problems somewhere else instead? Or further down the line? #strategicthinking

This is something I talk about a lot with clients. There is a cost to everything, we miss out on things one way or another. Whether we take action or not. There's always a cost. The cost of inaction can be extremely hard to identify. There are times when I've had to make decisions that come with risk, arguable a lot of risk. They're not easy to take as the situations are often ambiguous. Of course...mitigating risks can help but sometimes that's really hard to do when we don't know what we don't know. This is when we can become paralysed by uncertainty. Instead...I assume I'm going to lose out either way. I then ask myself, what is the cost of not taking action? How will I lose out and what does it say about me if I don't take the next step? Some costs we pay upfront and others in the future. Which costs do you want? This is obvious stuff but it can feel very hard to get perspective without speaking about the costs with someone. We try and figure it all out in our head and then we get in our own way. We make assumptions, just focus on the problems of trying to take action and usually end up feeling stuck. We then feel stuck...or decide to stay as we are...unaware of the costs of not taking action. #decisionmaking #coginitivebias #cognitivedistortions #riskassessment
