This is no joke: high employee turnover is extremely detrimental to the IT ecosystem. Personally, I feel happy when my friends tell me they are switching jobs and are excited about the new opportunities ahead. I have met all of these amazing people at meetups and events where I have seen them consistently go above and beyond their job requirements. Unfortunately, it is common to lose hope and become fatigued when very little technical and community impact is achieved. And I feel very sad; I will miss them, and the startup and technical community will once again lose momentum and trust. It took me a decade to understand how to build extremely successful technical teams and retain talent. We, as IT professionals, have a constant desire to solve big, complex problems and be part of companies that empower us to achieve the impossible and recognize our efforts. Companies willing to understand these unique characteristics of technical people enjoy the success that only a passionate workforce can attain: trust, ownership and responsibility, collaboration, constant improvement, empathy, and finally, frugality, because passion is more powerful than money or size. Please, have a sincere and effective conversation with your team and ask them what makes them happy. We can't afford to lose more great minds. What do you notice about my office non-traditional configuration? (my answer on the first comment)

  • An office with a non-traditional configuration.

The office has a layout that fosters communication and teamwork. The table is not used to display hierarchy, or hide behind, rather, it encourages collaboration and transparency. The small table, stocked with whiteboard pens, and the leather armchair invite us to engage in meaningfull and productive conversation and many times talk about life, feelings and happines.

One of my favorite voices on the topic of building and maintaining technical teams is Joel Spolsky. His essays on what keeps engineers engaged and satisfied in their roles and companies was instrumental to my work with enterprises on enabling highly productive technical teams.

Maybe the rapidly changing landscape has to do with it. Lots of disruptive technology and management philosophies happening, especially in the IT world, means the guy with the best marketing and most money wins out top.
