How many decimal places are enough when recording latitude and longitude? The answer is, as usual, "it depends". Maybe you really are trying to point out individual pinecones, grains of sand, or molecules - who am I to judge? But it helps to know how big "1" is before you start dividing it by 10, 1000, or 1000000000 . Here's a little map/graphic to show just how long one degree of longitude is, and a bit on why degrees of latitude and longitude are usually different lengths.
