While substantial research has examined the health impacts of community gardens, it’s just as important to find out what it takes to help new community gardeners succeed. New research examines the experiences of new community gardeners, identifying ways to enhance their success. I thought I’d share what I learned at a recent seminar on Black Glossy Cockatoos in the Shoalhaven. Here in the Shoalhaven, the Dharawal and Dhurga speaking communities have deep connections to Glossy Black Cockatoos. Even the main town, Nowra, is named after the Black Cockatoo. After the 2019-2020 bushfires devastated their habitat, Aboriginal custodians, working with the NSW government, developed a Healthy Country Plan to rehabilitate crucial habitat for the Glossy Black Cockatoo. Glossies need: - Large vertical tree hollows to nest - Nearby water sources - She-oak trees for food - Protection from predators like possums and goannas How we can help: - Preserve old trees. - Plant She-oak trees. - Report nesting sites on the Birdata app. DID YOU KNOW? Yellow facial feathers on female Glossy Black-Cockatoos are unique, like fingerprints! 📸 Family of Glossy Black-Cockatoos in Ulladulla, Jan 2024. Urban Gardening ~ creatively using our environments to grow fresh produce, encourage an active lifestyle, meet others, and reduce the pull on our international food market. While we're entering into the harvest season, I'd encourage you to check out The Gardens Network by Rooted. This is an organization who's mission is to "work toward an equitable food system by ensuring access to garden space and healthy food, and by educating beginning farmers and gardeners of all ages." Maybe this upcoming year is the time for you to learn the basics of gardening, jump back into a long-neglected pastime, or share your own horticulture expertise with someone just starting out! https://lnkd.in/gmaWGznp

Happy Friday Everyone! I was thinking today about the impact of what we do here at Manchester Grows and I wanted to dive a little bit into the history of community gardens. The first community gardens in the United States originated in Detroit, MI in the 1890's during the economic recession. When they first started, these were called "Vacant Lot Gardens" and they were used in a very similar vein to the ones we still use today. "The first community gardens in the United States were vacant lot gardens started during the economic recession of the 1890s. Detroit was the first city in the United States to create an extensive municipally sponsored urban gardening program using vacant lots in the city. Mayor Hazen Pingree started the program in response to the economic recession that began in 1893, which left many of the city’s industrial laborers, particularly recent Polish and German immigrants, unemployed and hungry. Known as “Pingree’s Potato Patches,” the program provided unemployed workers with plots of land on vacant city lots, seeds, and tools, and instructions (printed in three languages) on how to cultivate gardens. While Pingree’s plan could not fulfill all the demand, it was successful in alleviating some of the hunger and poverty in Detroit. The Detroit Plan was so successful that other cities from Boston to San Francisco developed similar plans" If you're interested in learning more about Community Gardens and their Historical significance, I've linked an article below. At Nurseline Community Services, we believe in the power of humanised person-centred care. It’s all about supporting each person in ways that respect their pace, preferences, and unique needs. In recent months, we’ve seen some meaningful progress, and I wanted to share a few highlights from the incredible journeys of those we support: 👉 One person has started to explore their passion for gardening, taking the lead on how they’d like to shape their outdoor space. It’s been great to see their vision come to life with support from our team. 👉 Another person recently transitioned from the hospital to their new home, settling into a more comfortable and independent living environment. 👉 With continued support, one person has been reducing the assistance needed to access their community, working towards greater independence—a significant milestone in their journey. 👉 We’ve also seen progress in personal care and self-empowerment, like one person taking new steps towards maintaining their own space and routine. Milestones like these remind us that people can reach their goals with the right support, no matter how big or small. We look forward to seeing even more milestones in the coming months as we continue to focus on tailored, person-centred care. #transformingcare #communitysupport #independence #personcentredcare #pbs #positivebehavioursupport
