It’s was a great privilege to hold an insightful discussion on the ‘Status of Rural Healthcare in the United States’ with Dr. Don Henderson, DHA, FACHE, an Assistant Professor and Director of the Doctor of Healthcare Administration program at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida. ✅We began with a review of the status of rural healthcare in the 1,800 rural hospitals in the United States at the present time. ✅Next, factors contributing to the closure of a rural community hospital were highlighted. ✅The role of payment structures on the current crisis in rural healthcare were discussed. ✅Followed by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the operation of the rural hospitals, the closures of these hospitals over the past 20 years and their locations. ✅The effectiveness of the Critical Access Hospital program implemented in 1997 to keep these hospitals open was discussed and importantly the new 2022 Rural Emergency Hospital Act aimed at helping rural hospitals survive. ✅We concluded with what can be done to address the survival of the rural hospitals, the provision of adequate staff and other resources for continued functionality. ✅Lastly, we looked at what the consequences of no intervention would mean for rural healthcare in the United States. A new report from consulting firm Chartis shows that 50% of the nation’s rural hospitals are operating at a loss and 20% are vulnerable to closure, potentially leading to more care deserts in these communities. This crisis is bigger than just one issue, but if I may permit myself the *smallest* of hot takes, I would just note that a lot of states are passing laws and policies that would discourage many medical professionals from taking up work there... to the detriment not only of the people who need these specific forms of care, but every member of the community. #healthcare #ruralhealth
