A timely article from the East Anglian Daily Times and Adam Barker about the impact of #waterscarcity on a growing number of #Suffolk businesses. Suffolk Chamber of Commerce has been lobbying on this for quite a while and so is pleased to announce that our partnership with Anglian Water Services and Essex & Suffolk Water to set up the #Suffolk #Business #Water Group is launched today. We hope the Group leads to improved communications from the water companies, a better sharing of water management ideas and infrastructure and a step up in targeted #lobbying activities. After all #Suffolk is the county that feeds, as well as powers and carries much of the national economy. #OneSuffolkVoice There is also the prospect that the initiative might be scalable to an Eastern region level. Businesses involved in the Group include British Sugar, Greene King, Konings NV, Abbeycroft Leisure and Humber Doucy Brewing Company. Last month saw a lot of progress for CRP’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs funded Smarter Greener Logistics (SGL) programme, particularly with our Digital Kerbside Management Trial. The trial uses Grid Smarter Cities Virtual Loading Bay technology to dynamically manage the kerbside, helping to improve congestion and air quality in the local area. Here’s a quick overview of what’s been happening: We’ve launched a Virtual Loading Bay in the City of London Corporation on Watling Street. The bay aims to service Ye Olde Watling pub and the Williamson Tavern, however it will also be available to local businesses in the area. CRP have been out speaking with local businesses to explain the trial and encourage uptake for their deliveries. 🍺 We’ve also identified three sites in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames that could be suitable for trialling virtual loading bays. Finally, our two virtual loading bays on the Cut, Waterloo in London Borough of Lambeth are starting to see more usage. NewCold’s commitment to innovative supply chain solutions was on display during a recent visit from the Honourable Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta, to our Coaldale facility. Representatives from the Town of Coaldale, Fisher Construction Group, and NewCold were present to greet the Premier as she met with teams and toured the construction of NewCold’s first advanced automated warehouse in Canada. NewCold shared with the Premier how the state-of-the-art food storage facility will create critical infrastructure to supply food across Canada. The automated high-bay warehouse will support regional food processors and address the growing need for cold storage and logistics while ensuring food safety.  NewCold will also invest in improving Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) rail connectivity to give businesses ready access to export their products with ease and security. As we observe #WaterSavingWeek, let's look back at the water industry's journey since privatisation began in 1989. With 11 primary 'Wholesalers' shouldering the responsibility of water supply and sewage treatment, the landscape underwent a significant transformation. Recent headlines underscore the challenges, from United Utilities' allegations of illegal sewage dumping to Thames Water struggling to stay afloat financially. 💧 Initially, businesses operating nationwide found themselves navigating choppy waters, as the geographic division among wholesalers meant they had to juggle multiple suppliers for their water needs. Some even found themselves in a whirlpool, dealing with dual suppliers for the same site. 🌊 However, the tide turned with the deregulation of the Scottish water market in 2008, paving the way for England's similar move in 2017. Today, businesses have a wider scope, casting their nets to consolidate water supplies with a single retailer. I was asked recently "when is a sale a sale?". The answer is when the value of the goods or services being offered exceeds the cost. It is obvious that the value of cleaning the waters of Lough Neagh is huge. Not only will it reverse the biggest ecological disaster in Northern Ireland but it will give a big boost to the fishing industries and tourism. But what is that worth? Is it worth saddling the tax payer with a £20 million contract every year with no end date? Some people think so. We don't. Our proposal will leave no footprint. It will not only remove the algae but keep it under control. It will reduce the nutrient content of the water much faster than any other method. It will re-oxygenate the water so that the lough can breath again. The best bit? Once the problem is under control and the lough can look after itself like nature intended everything is removed and the contract is over. No paying indefinitely. Our proposal will cost less than £10m and we can have the lough clean in 10 years. That is £1m a year. Does that sound like great value? This article from CBC has brought back some memories of when the province first issued its moratorium on bottled water operations. Being a resident of Elora, we heard a lot from local advocacy groups on the subject but I never quite understood why this industry was a target. Now, before I get piled on with messages about why people were so passionate about the subject, hear me out: Looking to the Grand River Conservation Authority's 2011 report on water use within the watershed (https://lnkd.in/gPtCsykx), bottled water equated to 0.6% of all permitted water takings at that time. Using the MECP's database of water takings, I quickly updated the percentage in 2024 and came up with 0.07% now, based on the Ministry's categorization. Are you surprised at how low this was/is?
