Producing over 50% of the UK's sugar from homegrown sugar beet grown by 2,300 farmers
About us
British Sugar is the leading supplier to the British and Irish food and beverage markets. We operate at four advanced manufacturing plants across East Anglia and the East Midlands. We currently employ around 1,200 permanent and contract staff and indirectly support around 7,000 UK jobs in the wider economy. We employ technicians, apprentices, graduates and experienced professionals for roles across the business and throughout the supply chain including engineers, accountants and project managers. Over the past 10 years, we have recruited and trained over 80 graduates and 50 apprentices. Over 2,300 growers supply our factories with around 8 million tonnes of sugar beet each year, which we process into up to 1.2 million tonnes of sugar. Sugar production is at the heart of our operations but using our highly integrated approach to manufacturing, we aim to transform all of our raw materials into sustainable products. We produce 500,000 tonnes of animal feed from sugar beet pulp. We recycle stones for building, lime for soil conditioning and soil for landscaping. Using our Combined Heat & Power plants, we export enough electricity to power 120,000 homes. We were also the first company to manufacture Bioethanol in the UK. Over the past five years, we have invested over £300m in our advanced manufacturing plants at Bury St Edmunds, Cantley, Newark and Wissington to make them as efficient and productive as possible.

Last week, some of our senior leaders gave up their time to support local charities and trusts around the Peterborough area. From wrapping food parcels and presents, to writing Christmas cards and clearing outdoor spaces - everyone threw themselves into the tasks at hand, with amazing results. Huge thanks to Safer off the Streets for letting us support some of your charity partners including - the YMCA, Peterborough Foodbank, Rough Sleeper Outreach, the Salvation Army and Women's Aid, plus the team at Sacrewell & the William Scott Abbott Trust too. Everyone had a great time supporting some incredible local causes 💛 #givingback #teamvolunteering

Yesterday, our Managing Director Keith Packer signed the Armed Forces Covenant alongside Lt Col Swales at our head office in Peterborough. We're proud to pledge our commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community as we recognise the contribution personnel (regulars, reservists, veterans and their families) make, not only to our company, but society as a whole. We look forward to further building on this commitment well into 2025 and beyond. #armedforcescovenant
