SCI Day Ceremony I recently had the privilege of attending the SCI Day Ceremony on 7th September 2024, hosted by the Spine Wellness & Care Foundation, Spinal Cord Society, and Amar Seva Sangam at the National Centre for Disease Control in Delhi. This inspiring event shed light on the critical need for inclusivity, awareness, and public health initiatives for those living with spinal cord injuries (SCI). The day’s activities included: - Inclusive Health Check-up Camp: Highlighting the importance of accessible healthcare for people with SCI. - Wheelchair Sports Program: A testament to the resilience and physical capabilities of individuals overcoming mobility challenges. - Wheelchair Cultural Program: A beautiful cultural exchange, showcasing how the human spirit thrives, even in adversity. Spinal Cord Injury is just one of many health challenges that require a strong public health framework — from prevention and early intervention to rehabilitation and social support. ### What is SCI? Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a condition that affects not only physical mobility but also has profound emotional, psychological, and socioeconomic consequences. Public health initiatives can play a crucial role in supporting individuals affected by SCI by: - Ensuring timely medical intervention and appropriate rehabilitation programs. - Promoting preventive measures such as road safety, workplace protections, and sports injury prevention. - Enhancing access to assistive devices and community-based rehabilitation programs. - Raising #awareness about SCI to foster inclusion in education, employment, and social settings. ### Looking Forward: Public Health and SCI SCI awareness is not just about medical care — it is about creating a society where everyone has the opportunity to lead a full and dignified life. My experiences at this event have reinforced my passion for public health and the importance of addressing *healthcare disparities*. As I move towards my next step in public health education, I remain committed to advocating for more inclusive health policies and supporting initiatives that improve the lives of those with SCI. Together, we can build a healthcare system that leaves no one behind. #PublicHealth #SCIDay #SpinalCordInjury #HealthcareInclusion #Rehabilitation #HealthForAll

Maybe it’s time to bring questions of capacity into the mainstream; to stop seeing it as a threshold for basic functioning but used more regularly with those in demanding roles and situations. It’s already assessed in decision-based way; the decisions involved running a school, hospital, or taking a country to war are of a totally different order to daily living. #mentalcapacity #courtofprotection #decisionmaking https://lnkd.in/eSfqNB_k

The majority of patients undergoing TKA are completely satisfied with their outcome although approximately one-fifth are not and 10–34% experience severe long-term pain after TKA and up to 30% of patients lack a clinically significant improvement following the procedure. 👉 Patients need individualised programmes, made collaboratively with health care professionals, to maximise outcomes and improve motivation. 👉 Improved interdisciplinary dialogue and a more holistic approach would increase patients’ confidence in their care. https://lnkd.in/eAB7tXAA

In some countries, having multiple sclerosis (MS) means missing out on education & career opportunities. Access to the right healthcare is a battle. The EMSP petition, “Quality Access to Care for People with Multiple Sclerosis and Neurological Conditions”, is a call to reduce inequalities in access to healthcare so people can access specialised, multi-disciplinary healthcare. Governments need to support professional societies and others to develop accredited MS specialist courses for healthcare professionals, and encouraging uptake in all countries. Throughout Brain Awareness Week, we put the spotlight on multiple sclerosis & the MS community using messages, get-togethers and storytelling to communicate the issues. Leeds is once again leading the way when it comes to health and care research and innovation — read about this fantastic world-first study 🌟⬇️
A study carried out by researchers at the NIHR Leeds BRC has revealed for the first time the benefits of screening for heart failure and providing specialised care for people with pacemakers. With up to 30 per cent of the one million pacemaker users in the UK having undiagnosed heart failure, the study highlights the potential need for combined heart failure-pacemaker clinics across the country and could influence cardiac care guidelines globally. The Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association (HCMA) recognizes that there are State and Federal level legislative initiatives that may positively or negatively impact the HCM community. With your help, we can send unique messages to policymakers to allow the voices of patients and many other HCM stakeholders to be heard. On the Federal level, the "Cardiomyopathy Health, Education, Awareness, Research, and Training in Schools (HEARTS Act of 2024)" has been reported by committee, awaiting full House action. The Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association supports H.R.6829 "Cardiomyopathy Health, Education, Awareness, Research and Training in Schools (HEARTS Act of 2024)" which requires: The development of educational materials and resources on cardiomyopathy and risk assessment to be distributed to schools, teachers, and parents. Public awareness campaigns. Guidelines regarding the placement of life-saving automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools. Grants to nationwide elementary and secondary schools to create cardiac emergency response plans. Show your support for H.R.6829 by contacting your state's representatives in Congress. Please consider contacting your Congressperson and asking them to support HR 6829. https://lnkd.in/gZGnA33y... Your message can make a difference! #4hcm #HypertrophicCardiomyopathy #BigHeartBigLife

October is National Physical Therapy Month: a moment to recognize the unsung heroes of healthcare. As American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) reminds us, we are licensed doctors working with diverse patient populations impacted by disease, injury, and movement dysfunction. But beyond the formalities, we are the providers who help patients rebuild, recover, and rediscover the strength they thought they'd lost. We guide them through the small victories and the hard-fought battles, walking beside them on their journey back to movement and independence. Historically, we've faced challenges that tested our resilience, from limited recognition to navigating a complex healthcare system. Yet, despite the hurdles, our mission has always been clear: restore not just movement, but a functional quality of life. We've come a long way from where we started, and though the road ahead is still filled with obstacles, we continue to evolve. So here’s to the physical therapists out there, charting the path forward with unshakable passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to transforming lives. Our journey continues. -Ryan #physicaltherapy #physiotherapy #October #PTmonth
