The excitement and buzz following an IPO often results in founders/employees experiencing an emotional roller coaster. Euphoria, greed, fear, even catastrophic loss are all on the table for anyone carrying a meaningful portion of their net worth in a single stock position. A few observations: 📉 Of the ~25k+ common stocks in the Center for Research in Securities Prices (CRSP) database, by far the most frequent 10-year buy-and-hold return is -100% (Bessembinder, 2018)  👨👩👧👦 You and your family's goals, aspirations, and risk appetite are the most important thing. Whether it’s buying a new home or other big ticket expenditure, enjoying the fruits of your labor is what it’s all about!  💸 Taxes are, and will always be, a headwind (ex. selling the position, paying up to 37% in capital gains taxes, then investing/spending the proceeds) So how should we think about tradeoffs between diversification, goals/aspirations, and taxes? What are the most sophisticated investors doing?  What are the tools available at your disposal to do this? Join Jason R. The momentum is building.

It was great to participate last week (even if virtually, to avoid a trip around the world!) in the in-person congress of the Austrialian CPA in Canberra, alongside old friends such as Stanford Digital Economy Lab 's Erik Brynjolfsson, more recent collaborators such as Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford's Karthik Ramanna, academics-turned-policy-makers such as Stephen King, MDs such as Kmart's Ian Bailey, or celebrities such as Kate Blanchet. Thanks to Jehan Casinader for a terrific interview on how CPAs and Finance Professionals can navigate a world of #platforms and #ecosystems, and why they're useful as they help turn #buzzwords into #reality by helping us track where and how value is added. "The summer gatherings of the alphas are upon us. This weekend, the annual running of the bulls will commence in Pamplona, Spain. And a couple days later, the media, tech and finance moguls of the world will begin descending in their private jets on Sun Valley, Idaho, for the annual confab hosted by Allen & Co., boutique investment bank. Still, it wouldn’t be shocking if some of the media and AI executives there end up hashing out agreements behind closed doors in between speaker sessions. After all, Sun Valley is known as a kind of Coachella for dealmaking. Disney’s acquisition of ABC, AOL’s bid for Time Warner and Jeff Bezos’ purchase of The Washington Post were all reportedly negotiated either in full or in part at the event. And if the deal doesn’t get done before then, it wouldn’t be surprising if Shari Redstone finalized her off again, on again discussions to merge Paramount with David Ellison’s Skydance Media at the conference. All the dealmaking isn’t exactly a shock given who hosts the event: Allen & Co., a top-tier investment bank. The firm, founded over a century ago in New York, is small compared to behemoths like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs and seems to prefer staying largely invisible to the wider world (it doesn’t appear to have a public-facing website). The Sun Valley conference, which the firm started in the early 1980s, has helped it punch way above its weight in the investment banking business, giving wannabe attendees an incentive to funnel business to the bank to better their odds of getting a ticket." https://lnkd.in/gF7v7gcq
