Global Research Lead @ Google News Initiative

Reflecting on 2024, I’m left with deep gratitude for those I’ve had the privilege to work with this year – and to all who are working tirelessly to strengthen journalism across the world. The past year provided the opportunity to share insights from our research partnerships - and discuss the moment we’re in - with many. As we approach 2025, 3 challenges are top of mind: 📰 Journalism - professionally-sourced, rigorously-vetted, thoughtfully-produced - remains essential. But it can struggle to cut through and connect with consumers in an increasingly noisy, fractured information ecosystem. Many news organizations are still finding paths to sustainability - and models for success do exist - but headwinds persist. 👤 Journalism is being produced by an evolving set of news providers: from small digital natives focused on topical & geographic gaps to journalists reporting primarily on social & video platforms. But with so many new entrants, it’s also become more challenging to distinguish those adhering to journalistic standards from those who aren’t. 🌱 News consumption continues shifting drastically for the “global youth”: from how they discover the news to how they build trust. This shouldn’t change news orgs' commitment to journalistic rigor. But it may mean that the “news product” of the future will look different than it traditionally has to remain relevant. None of these challenges have easy answers. All will require continued collaboration to find a way forward. It’s why I’m grateful to the partnership of so many and want to recognize a few, in particular: 💡 The Digital News Report from Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism continues to ground the discussion on evolving news consumption, concretely, in data at a global scale. I’m pleased we have renewed our support for the 2025 edition - and grateful to Rasmus Kleis Nielsen and Nic Newman for their leadership through all these years. 💡 In 2025, the Google News Initiative and FT Strategies will provide free News Sustainability Project consultations to 500+ publishers globally, following a successful pilot this year. I want to thank George Montagu, Niall Crozier, Edouard Gibert and Aled John for being amazing partners on a journey that dates back to 2021. 💡 Project Oasis went global in 2024, identifying 3K+ publishers across 67 countries. I’m thrilled to continue expanding the project, hoping to cement the effort as a way to identify credible emerging news providers on an ongoing basis. A huge thank you to Janine Warner, María Eugenia Alvarez and the SembraMedia team for all their work. Journalism is crucial to produce the tapestry of facts that help communities build shared understandings of their realities- the first step to solving problems. It’s also how humanity begins telling the story of itself - sketching its first outline and, sometimes, suggesting how that story can change. Strengthening that fabric is vital work -and a collective responsibility- with more to do🙏
